![]() The German FA Cup
Berlin - The German FA (DFB) Cup has not only a sporting value. Art experts value the trophy at around 35,000 Euros. ![]() The-then president of the DFB Peco Bauwens commissioned Cologne artist Wilhelm Nagel in 1964 to produce a new cup, saying that the old trophy reminded him too much of the Nazi era.
The new "cup" weights roughly 12.5 pounds and is made of hot gold-plated Sterling silver. Nagel used 250 g fine gold and decorated the trophy with twelve tourmalines, 12 pieces of rock crystal and 18 nephrites. The DFB emblem of green nephrite forms the centre. Until 1991, approx. 700 letters and numbers (listing the years and names of the winners) had been engraved on the base, the latter had to be enlarged by 5 cm to provide more room. The base area is now sufficiently proportioned to allow engravings until 2020. The "cup" can hold up to 8 litres. |
