DFB Cup: 5:1 win against Torgelow

HSV progress into the second round of the DFB cup thanks to a 5-1 win over Torgelow.

Torgelow - Hamburg have qualified for the second round of the cup. Armin Veh's team beat SV Torgelower Greif 5-1 (1-1) on sunday evening (15.08.10) in front of 8,000 fans. Ruud van Nistelrooy hit a hattrick (34./65./67.), Paolo Guerrero (53.) and David Jarolim also got on the scoresheet. Daniel Pankau was the scorer of the equaliser to make it 1-1.

The season 2010/11 began in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern for HSV in Torgelow, against TSV Greif. DFB Cup the task of the day. After selecting his captain (Westermann) and number 1 (Rost) Armin Veh surprised a few people with his starting line-up, bereft of a number of left sided defensive players through injury (Aogo and Jansen) Eljero Elia was unusually selected to fill the void. "Eljero played there in his youth, not a lot of people seem to know this" grinned Veh.

Half an hour to score
He works as a chef in the cantine of the iron foundry and could have been a hero after just two minutes. Striker Daniel Pankau found himself one on one with keeper Frank Rost after running the ball out of his own half, Rost stayed on his feet long enough to deny him glory however. It is often the case that games really kick-off once the winners are in front, sometime or other the underdogs fall apart, even when they have plenty of chances. This was not the case in Torgelow, in the first 45 minutes at least. Hamburg took the lead in the 34th minute through Ruud van Nistelrooy, but this did not change the fact that Hamburg were finding it hard to break down their opponents. Chances in front of goal were sparse, van Nistelrooy could have doubled the lead just after scoring and Petric had a headed chance. That was about it from Hamburg until the half time whistle, far too little. It was fitting then that Pankau would be crowned hero of the half as he beat Rost with his second chance in the 43rd minute to level it heading into the break.

Thankfully the second half was better than the first. Hamburg did not need a wake up call to get going and things flowed better than in the first 45. Paolo Guerrero scored in the 53rd minute with a freekick to make it 2:1 and the game was then pretty much decided when van Nistelrooy headed home to make it 3:1 (65.). It was also fitting that van Nistelrooy took the game to another level, his hammer of a freekick in the 67th minute from 28 metres was one for the cameras. The attacker was the best man on the pitch throughout and showed that he is finally fully fit. David Jarolim put the icing on the cake in the 81st minute, van Nistelrooy this time turning provider. Thanks to this expected win Hamburg are in the second round of the cup with the games expected to be played on the 26th and 27th of October. Before then there are more important matters, namely the first Bundesliga game in the Imtech Arena against Schalke 04 on Saturday (21.08.10)
