Goodbye - 14 HSV players on international duty
Hamburg have made a perfect start to the season after winning 2-1 against Schalke and 3-1 against Frankfurt. But League duty will be put on hold as 14 HSV squad members depart for international responsibilities. Hamburg -As the Hamburg players returned on Saturday evening after the win against Frankfurt and said their goodbyes in the Imtech Arena car park many of them knew they would not be seeing each other again for sometime. After a short run on Sunday morning Armin Veh gave his players the day off on monday, reward for their second win of the season. This signalled the big goodbye for the majority of Veh's players as they left for international duties.
Gojko Kacar (Serbia) is set to face the Faroe Islands (03.09 in Torshavn) and Slovenia (07.09 in Belgrade) and Muhamed Besic is in the squad for Bosnia and Herzogovinia's U-21 games against Italy (03.09) and Hungary (07.09). Lennard Sowah and Robert Labus are two other youngsters on tour, the pair are in the German U-19 squad to face Holland and Denmark (03.09 and 06.09). Then there are the older Germans in the HSV team, two of which have been nominated by Joachim Löw.
Piotr Trochowski and Dennis Aogo have not been nominated due to lack of fitness but Heiko Westermann and Marcall Jansen have been included and will wear the German shirt against Belgium on the 3rd and Azerbaijan four days later.
Friendly against Victoria All in all there 14 players will be out of Hamburg for a week on international duty, a hefty number and something HSV can be proud of. This doesn't make Armin Veh's job any easier in training and it means improvisation will be needed this week. "We will be bringing some youth players into the squad to train with the remaining players, this won't be a problem" said Veh seeing things positively, "the lads are keen to prove themselves, it will be an interesting week." Especially as a friendly match on Tuesday (31.08) is on the cards
SC Victoria are the opponents, the team who recently qualified for the second round of the DFB cup and will face Wolfsburg and will no doubt provide Hamburg with a stern test. Especially for Piotr Trochowski and Dennis Aogo who will take advantage of the time to get match fit. "It is better for the both of them, as they have not been able to take part in too much training recently" said Veh "now we have a bit of time to get them back in shape, the internationals have come at a perfect time". This means that by the 11th of September not only will all the HSV players be back in Hamburg, they will also be fully fit.
