0-1 against Nürnberg: Losing start to new season

HSV began the 2012/13 season with a 0-1 home defeat to Nürnberg, in front of 50,000 at the Imetch Arena in Hamburg on Saturday afternoon (25.08.12). The only goal of the game was scored by Hanno Ballitsch on 68 minutes.

The first home game of the new season, a 50,000 crowd and perfect playing conditions set the stage up nicely for HSV to begin their league campaign with a win over Nürnberg. But it wasn't to be. The home side took the early initiative but mostly were stopped by two rows of four Nürnberg players before they could threaten the goal being guarded by Schäfer. The opening chance of the game on 24 minutes came after an Aogo free kick was headed towards goal by Westermann. Luckily for the visitors Schäfer managed to get a hand to the ball to prevent it from crossing the goal line. The best chances of the opening half fell towards the end. Aogo fired a crisp shot from ten metres out agonisingly wide of target. Then Son failed by a whisker to connect with a loose ball, allowing Schäfer to clear the danger. Nürnberg also began to get forward and Polter got an opening shot in. But the biggest chance was missed on the stroke of haltime by Ballitsch. HSV keeper Aldler saved superbly to thwart the former Hannover midfielder.

Two minutes into the second half Adler was once again called upon to deny Polter. But the visitors had found their way into the game and took a deserved lead on 68 minutes, as Nilsson header a corner from the right onto the crossbar. Ballitsch was perfectly placed to open the scoring from the rebound. HSV fought back and created two good chances, as Aogo and Westermann combined again but failed to score because Schäfer somehow kept the ball out with the help of the inside of a post. Then Schäfer denied Westermann a goal-bound header with a wonderful reflex save. The Nürnberg keeper managed to get in between Berg and Rudnevs to stop a further scoring chance (72., 74.). HSV were out of luck on the day. In the final mnute Schäfer was beaten by a Jansen header which came back off the crossbar. Moments later Nürnberg were celebrating victory with their travelling fans, leaving HSV to reflect on what might have been.

The Rothosen are in action again next Saturday (01.09.12, 15.30 CET), as they mke the short trip to the Weserstadion, where old rivals Werder Bremen await them on matchday 2.
