Season Bundesliga 26.08.2012
"We will work hard to improve"

The 0-1 matchday 1 home defeat to Nürnberg had a very sobering effect on the team and coaching staff. HSV.de collected the following post-match reaction.

Everyone at the club had hoped that the opening game of the 50th Bundesliga season had gone differently. As it turned out, the Rothosen lost 0-1 at home to Nürnberg despite having decent scoring chances. HSV were also denied by the woorwork no less than three times. Hardly surprising then that the protagonists were down in the dumps as they spoke to us after the game...

Marcell Jansen: Obviously it is a horrible situation when you lose the opening Bundesliga game of the new season. Sadly major improvement was not visible in our play, even if the body language was better, but we were also unlucky to hit the woodwork so many times.

René Adler: I know we were not very convincing in our play, but we created chances which we sadly failed to convert, and were unlucky hitting the post twice and the crossbar. We are missing that little bit of luck you need that Nürnberg had in front of goal. As they scored the ball came back off the bar and fell to Ballitsch who couldn't miss from point blank range. We have to earn that kind of luck and look ahead to our next game.

"Must work hard on our game"

Thorsten Fink: I think we should have taken an early lead, but sadly we are lacking the necessary conviction at the moment. The outside pressure after our first round cup exit greatly increased during the week which didn't help team confidence. My team failed to deal with it today. I am happy with the effort being put in but we must work hard to improve our game. We will do so over the coming weeks as well as holding intensive discussions. I am totally convinced that the team can do more and would have proved it had we taken the lead. But that didn't happen and the disappointment is massive in not only the players but the fans too, which is understandable.

Frank Arnesen: When you play Nürnberg at home of course you want to win. I expected a different performance than the one I saw today. I saw certain things which I didn't like at all. We will discuss them over coming days. We have to get our heads down and work hard on an improvement. We have to approach the situation in a serious manner, even when we know that we are not having an easy time of it.
