Match against poverty: The stars came out to shine

It was supposed to be a feast of football, but was so much more than that. The match against poverty at HSV's Imtech Arena exceeded all expectations, on an emotional night where the stars came out to shine.

It was a great evening for football, HSV and Hamburg. Almost 25,000 people turned up to support the event at the Imtech Arena and they were not to be disappointed, as HSV with stars from today and yesteryear "took on" the Ronaldo & Co. eleven. Some of their players may have hung up their boots some time ago, but the likes of  Zidane, Figo, Ronaldo & Co. were still a sight to behold as they turned on the magic with incredible skill and spectacular goals. It was an emotional night as the Hamburg crowd got behind both teams with songs and warm applause. Match referee was Italy's Collina and of course HSV's cult masseur Hermann Rieger was visibly moved by it all. For the record the visitors edged the goal feast 5-4.

The result was of course of no interest to anyone, it was all about the good cause. All proceeds from the event went to the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to help in thier fight against famine in Africa. Ronaldo & Zidane, the patrons of the annual event secured the services of a host of world famous players, to play a HSV all-star team which included the likes of  Barbarez, Hoogma, Albertz, Töfting and Mahdavikia. Both teams turned on the style with clever passing, back-heels, solo runs and dream goals to enchant the crowd.
HSV start well - Ronaldo & Co. turn the game around

HSV started the game well and had Richie Golz in goal, who it seemed the years had passed by as he made a string of brilliant saves. Hamburg took the lead as Petric netted with a superb volley that would have done Ronaldo proud!  Zé Roberto then made it 2-0 with a crafty chip. The opposition however were having none of it, and turned the game around with strikes by Drogba, Ronaldo, Capdevila, Salgado and Figo (what a score sheet!). Current HSV players Rincon and Son both scored but Zidane, Ronaldo & Co edged the game 5-4.

The club would like to thank everyone who supported the good cause by attending the game, as well as those who donated but couldn't watch the game live. And of course a big "thank you" goes to the players who donated their time to make it a night to remember under the floodlights at the Imtech Arena in Hamburg.
