Season Bundesliga 10.12.2011
No goals in Mainz

0:0! HSV and Mainz were unable to convert any of the multitude of chances they created, during their round 16 Bundesliga clash at the sold out Coface-Arena in Mainz.

After a game of tactics and sweat, Mainz and HSV had to settle for a first ever draw between the two sides as the game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes on Saturday afternoon (10.12.2011). That meant that the Rothosen extended their unbeaten run under coach Thorsten Fink to eight games. The sell out crowd saw an exciting game during which both defences were made to sweat on several occasions. In the end though, both keepers kept a clean sheet, mainly because chances on both sides were squandered by poor finishing, or indeed by some fine goalkeeping.

Before kick off, the record books revealed that there had never been a draw between Mainz and Hamburg. Both sides began as if they were keen to maintain that record. HSV had an early grip on the game, nipping any Mainz danger usually in the bud. The first gilt-edged chance of the game fell to HSV's Marcell Jansen, who had scored three goals in four games before kick off. Mainz lost possession going forward and the ball found its way to Jansen down the left. The former Germany defender capaialised on the mistake made by Svensson, but Mainz keeper Wetklo denied Jansen who had got a shot away from an acute angle.

Mainz began to get a foothold in the game and looked dangerous as they fought their way through the middle, before feeding the ball to their strikers up front. During a period of pressure, Pospech, Ivanschitz, Caligiuiri and Ivanschitz  either missed chances or were denied by HSV keeper Jaroslav Drobny, who once again underlined his superb form of late. The game was goalless at halftime.

There was much of the same after the break: It may not have been pretty to watch but it certainly was hard-fought, as both teams searched for the opening goal until deep into injury time. HSV start debutant Ilisevic and Petric who came on as a sub for the first time in six weeks, both went agonisingly close. At the other end it was as you were, as Drobny saved some really promising Mainz efforts towards the end.

Drobny vs. Choupo-Moting
Three of those late Mainz chances fell to Hamburg-born former HSV striker Choupo-Moting. Drobny won the day and rkept his third clean sheet in four games.

In the final Bundesliga game before the winter break, HSV entertain FC Augsburg, who moved off the bottom of the Bundesliga table by beating top five side Gladbach at home.
