HSV lose 0-1 to Bayern

A 78th minute strike by French superstar Frank Ribery was enough to give Bayern München a 1-0 Bundesliga round 24 victory over HSV, at the sold out Allianz-Areana on Sunday evening...

Labbadia rings the changes
Both coaches made changes to their sides from last weekend. Bayern supremo Louis van Gaal chose to start the game with French superstar Ribery instead of the former HSV striker Olic, who took his place on the bench. Bruno Labbadia made three changes: Skipper Jarolim, Boateng and Berg got the nod over Aogo, Tesche and Rincon. An interesting aspect was the fact that Zé Roberto, Olic, van Buyten, Jarolim, Trochowski and Butt had all played for both teams.

roles in the North vs. South classic were clear from the opening whistle from match referee Lutz Wagner. HSV camped out in their own half at first and waited to see what the Bundesliga title aspirants had in store for them. Bayern played down the wings, but only as far as the Hamburg box where they seemed to run out of ideas early on. The first goalmouth action the capacity crowd saw came on 12 minutes, as Schweinsteiger played a wonderful through ball to fellow German international Müller, who lobbed the ball just wide of target from only seven metres out.

That chance marked a period of pressure by the home side, which only resulted in a couple of half chances missed by Robben (14.) and Ribery (15.). All of a sudden at the other end the best chance thusfar fell to HSV. Trochowski unleashed a fine shot from outside the Bayern area, which Butt needed two attempts to deal with(18.). Four minutes later a mistake by Demichaelis opened up another shooting opportunity for Trochowski. This time though his shot was wayward despite being well placed.
Bayern had more of the ball, but usually found their match in a HSV side willing to run and tackle for each other. Misplaced passing was rife in Bayern's build up play early on, but that changed on 36 minutes as Robben floated a free kick into the Hamburg area, and Müller headed into the outside goal netting from an acute angle.
The game remained goalless but entertaining, which is almost always the case when the Bavarian "serial" Bundesliga champions lock horns with the only team never to have been relegated from the top flight. Seconds before halftime Petric almost punished Bayern for a mistake made by Contento. The usually prolific Croatian fired over the bar, and the game was goalless at the break.
Injured Rost replaced by Hesl, Olic reaches benchmark
HSV had to do without first choice keeper Rost, who rermained in the changing rooms at halftime, after sustaining an injury as he collided with Schweinsteiger. His place went to his understudy Hesl. That did not have any effect on the game, as Bayern continued to press forward, and HSV stood their ground.
The second half lacked the class of the first. Only wayward efforts by Ribery (51.), and Petric at the other end momentarily set pulses running a beat faster. Bayern boss van Gaal reacted by replacing the-luckless Gomez with Klose. Labbadia took Berg off and replaced him with Pitroipa. Those changes failed to have much of an impact on the match.
One piece of individual class too good for HSV
On 78 minutes though disaster struck for the visitors, as a long ball from inside the Bayern half found Ribery. The silky-skilled Frenchman ran at the opposing defenders, before duping Demel and deservedly opening the scoring with a fine low shot from 14 metres out. It was the 2,200th goal conceded in the Bundesliga by HSV, and was enough to secure maximum points for the home side. Another benchmark was worthy of note. Former HSV crowd favourite Olic was brought on as a substitute for what was his 100th Bundesliga game. That late Ribery strike was too much for HSV to take. The Rothosen and their full contingent of travelling faithful had to admit (albeit through clenched teeth!) that Bayern were well worth the three points which saw them move to the Bundesliga summit again.
