"The second half was good – apart from the result"

So many scoring chances – after a strong second half HSV should have taken more than the solitary point home with them from their Bundesliga matchday 18 clash away to Nürnberg on Sunday afternoon. Read here what was said after the final whistle had been blown.

The heads of the HSV players sunk as the final whistle sounded on the first game of the new year in Nürnberg. They were too dominant after the break, creating a hatful of quality scoring opportunities only to be denied by two shots which hit the post and some fine goalkeeping by home stopper Rafael Schäfer. The Rothosen had to settle for a 1-1 draw after they looked odds on to take maximum points home with them to Hamburg. The players cheered up a bit after thanking the large contingent of travelling HSV faithful for their superb support. Reflecting on that second half, HSV did indeed make a positive start to the second half of the Bundesliga season and are surely ready to lock horns with old rivals Werder Bremen at the Imtech Arena next weekend. The following was said after full time at the Nürnberg Stadion:
Thorsten Fink: We played poorly in the first half, never managing to get a foothold in the game. We took the initiative after the break and simply did everything better. But you have to be awake when your opponents have the ball. To concede a goal following a throw in is very disappointing. I feel sorry for Michael (Mancienne). I hope his injury is not serious, although Jeffrey Bruma did a good job replacing him. Rafael van der Vaart had to play the full 90 minutes, after I had taken off Tolgay Arslan who was in danger of being sent off.
Heiko Westermann: We were not good in the first half, but in the second we put them under a lot of pressure, created good scoring chances and should have won here today. It is annoying that the post robbed us of what would have been a deserved late winner. But we must take from this game the fact that we are able to create chances against teams who mass their defence. That is positive.

Marcell Jansen: After a poor first half we improved and played well after the break. I must say though that you must never concede a goal the way we did. We should have marked them better instead of  just standing around in space. Apart from that the second half was okay, it was good - apart from the result.

Rene Adler: I hardly had anything to do, especially in the second half. Then all of a sudden the ball is in the back of your net. It is very annoying. We have to remain more focused otherwise we rob ourselves of our just rewards. We played a very good second half. I am sure we will put more of our chances away next time.

Rafael van der Vaart: I felt good and knew that after the injury to Michael Mancienne and the necessary substitution of Tolgay Arslan that I would have to play longer than the 60 minutes we had originally planned. You simply can't win Bundesliga games playing the way we did in the first half. But we were better in the second half and scored a nice goal. On the whole a point is okay, although we dominated the second half and had the better clear cut scoring chances. Personally, I am happy to be fit. Long may it stay that way.
