Lam: "A dream come true"

In an interview with HSV.de, Zhi Gin Lam told us what his new contract means to him, and what it feels like walking out into the Imtech Arena.

Zhi Gin Lam (20) has without doubt been  HSV's shooting star over recent weeks. Thrown in at the deep end by interim coach Rodolfo Cardoso away to VfB Stuttgart, the youngster didn't just keep his head above water, but proved that he can swim with the big boys! His richly-deserved reward was a professional contract which will expire on June 30th 2015. We caught up with the friendly midfielder during the week he signed his contract. Read here what he had to say.

Zhi Gin, do you sometimes have to pinch yourself, to realise what has happened to you over recent weeks?

Lam: It is really amazing how quickly things have gone. I am delighted that I was able to take the chance given to me, but I need more time to take it all in.

You now have enough time to do so. You have extended your contract until 2015. What does that step mean to you?

Lam
: Everyone dreams of becoming a pro, and you work towards it from youth level onwards. When you make the senior team at the club in the same town where your family also lives, it is a dream come true.

"His time will come", knows HSV boss Thorsten Fink (l.) with Zhi Gin Lam.

And all of that during a turbulent period where HSV occupy a relegation spot in the Bundesliga table. How do you see your role in the scheme of things?

Lam: Our coach has told me that he wants to rely more on experienced players for the relegation battle. He also told me that my time will come, and that I am on the right track.

And that's okay by you?

Lam: Absolutely. I want to further establish myself. Everything has gone so quickly, but it won't always happen at this speed. Sometimes you have to take your place at the back of the queue. I want to continue to find my feet. That is my next goal.

And of course take three points against Hoffenheim...

Lam: We have shown an upward curve in recent games, which we want to continue. Away to Leverkusen between the 30th until 60th minutes we had 70% of possession. If we can reproduce that form on Sunday, things will be looking good to keep all three points in Hamburg.

What is the feeling like when you walk out with the team into the sold out Imtech Arena, where until a few weeks ago you were playing in front of a couple of hundred people for the reserves?

Lam: It is a dream come true every time. The feeling is difficult to describe. It is simply incredible.

And when the game begins?

Lam: Then what you have done in training automatically kicks in. You block everything else out and you are fully concentrated.

Good luck on Sunday!
