Veh has selection headache!
Armin Veh has a problem most managers can only managers of. With Mladen Petric, Paolo Guerrero, Jonathan Pitroipa and Eljero Elia Veh has four top players for just three first team positions, and that is not including Piotr Trochowski, who returned to training this week. Hamburg -Veh appeared at the press conference on Thursday (26.08.2010) for the game against Frankfurt beeming with excitement and satisfaction. This comes as no surprise after the the impressive 2-1 win against Schalke 04 and also considering the current personell situation. Veh has the luxury problem of having four strikers fighting for three positions ahead of the game against Eintracht (Saturday, 15:15 CET live on HSV ticker). Mladen Petric is one of those players, who according to Veh, "has the upper hand in defensive and standard situations". Paolo Guerrero is "technically strong and good with the ball". Veh has stated that he already has an idea of his starting eleven, but refused to reveal it before the final training session. Petric may well be given a birth on the right side of midfield "I believe Petric can play this position and I have every faith in him" said Veh.
Jonathan Pitroipa and Eljero Elia have also impressed the HSV trainer in recent weeks. "Elia played fantastic against Schalke and Pit fitted into the system well. If I need two quick players who like to hug the wings then these two are definately the first choices". Ruud van Nistelrooy seems to be the only player guaranteed a starting place after scoring five goals in the first two competitive games of the season. But even the Dutchman still has to "work hard" and will not be "gifted a start" from the trainer. "the team's success is the only thing which counts" The only thing which counts for Veh is "the success of the team" and the 49 year old knows that "there is a danger of conflicts when everyone is fit". Despite this Veh would much rather have it this way than the other way around. His luxury problem looks set to become almost fit for a king over the next few days as Piotr Trochowski returned to training this week, the first of two German internationals to return from injury. The other, Dennis Aogo, is expected back on Sunday. "Piotr has taken part in all sessions this week and may be in the squad for the weekend, although this will mean I will have to take out a player who has worked hard over recent weeks. I will make my decision either today or tomorrow." explained Veh.
"Our medical staff have informed me that Dennis should be back in training on Sunday". By which time HSV will hopefully have their second three points in the bag and will have made as Veh put it "a very good start to the season". Veh believes however, that it is only after ten games when a manager can really assess the start to the season, in any case, HSV are intent on bringing something back from Frankfurt, preferably "the full three points". Something Veh believes Hamburg are "very capable of doing".
