Westermann captain - Rost stays number 1

Trainer Armin Veh has made his decisions. Heiko Westermann will be the new captain for the coming season, Frank Rost keeps his number one jersey.

Hamburg - Armin Veh made his most important decisions so far public on friday (13.08.10) ahead of the first competitive game against SV Greif on Sunday (15.08.10). Heiko Westermann will wear the captains armband in the coming season. The new signing from Schalke replaces David Jarolim, who was captain for the last two years. " I am happy to take the responsibility and I am looking forward to the job" said Westermann.

Armin Veh gave his reasons for giving Westermann the armband, after giving Mladen Petric, Ruud van Nistelrooy, Zé Roberto, David Jarolim and Heiko Westermann run outs as captain. " I want to bring a fresh start to the club, Heiko is a recognised and well liked player who captained Schalke in the Champions League. We have signed him to do the same here."

Rost stays number one

Veh has also answered the goalkeeper question. Frank Rost will remain first choice, meaning new signing Jaroslav Drobny will have to make do with a place on the bench. The trainer spoke to both players personally on friday, "Frank has done great in pre-season, now he needs to turn this into performances on the field" said Veh. "When a new keeper comes it means you have to up your game, both of them are as good as each other, but Rost is going to play".

Frank Rost is confident he can do the job. "I am looking forward to the new season and hope we are all going to have a lot of fun together, as that is key to being succesful." Rost is especially looking forward to the derby against St. Pauli. "The whole city is going to be buzzing" said Rost.
