Happy New Year!

Happy New Year!

2017 has drawn to a close, so HSV board member Heribert Bruchhagen has dedicated a few words to the club’s fans to thank them for their support this year.

Dear HSV fans,

An eventful and largely nerve-jangling 2017 is behind us. Our Bundesliga comeback in the first half of the year, which our team crowned with a win on the final matchday, was followed by a promising start to this campaign. After victories in the opening two games of the season, a slump in form has seen us return to the lower reaches of the table, where we have since been battling for survival. We will, and must, continue to fight until the end of the season.

I’ve been asked why my prediction for the rest of the season isn’t a rosier one. The reason for that is quite simple – I am a realist. I can see and read our schedule and the standings. As soon as the fixtures for the first half of the season were announced, I suspected we would have a bumpy start. Despite this, I am confident we will achieve our goals. I have faith in the work of our sporting director Jens Todt, in our head coach Markus Gisdol and in our team, who will have to be more efficient in the upcoming second half of the campaign.

For many of you, facing another fight for Bundesliga safety will not be easy. It shreds the nerves, while also making some not look forward to weekends that should be highly anticipated. You can, however, be certain that we are aware of our precarious position in the table and the size of the challenges of the coming weeks and months. We know it’ll be hard. We know it’ll be tiring. But we know we will only secure safety together. We want to, and will do everything to make sure this happens, starting from Monday when we travel to our training camp in Spain.

At this point, I would like to thank you all on behalf of HSV for your support, commitment and above all, for your unwavering faith. Many of you have suffered alongside the team for a long time now, but the greatest strength of our club lies in the fact we never give up, we stick together and always put up a fight.

I can say this with confidence thanks to the experience I’ve gathered in my first year as a board member: HSV is no “chaos club” and I will not be told differently. We work within a competitively viable structure and professional organisation, we have made a lot of progress and will continue to do so in 2018 too. But that’s enough from me, I wish you all a healthy and happy New Year and that we have a successful end to our 2017/18 campaign.
