3-5! HSV lose Holstein Kiel friendly

A two goal lead after Hunt and Kostic netted turned out to be too little for the Rothosen. The second division battlers turned things round after the break and ran out the deserved winners.

HSV lost their first stern test of the close season. After three wins over lower league outfit Rotenburger SV and the charity game victories, Markus Gisdol and his side went down 3-5 against second division northerners Holstein Kiel. The interest in the game was so great that the game was switched to a more suitable venue in Neumünster. The 6,000-strong capacity crowd more than justified the decision. The game began promisingly for the Bundesliga side, as Aaron Hunt opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 7 minutes, before Kostic (10.) pounced following a slight mistake by home keeper Kronholm to fire his side two goals in front. That lead didn’t last long. On11 minutes Kiel’s Marvin Ducksch was bundled over inside the Hamburg box by Papdopoulos. He rose to his feet and duly dispatched the resulting spot kick past HSV stopper Mathenia to reduce the deficit.

Aaron Hunt congratulated by team mates.

Kiel turn things around

The game began to settle down after a hectic opening period. Both defences kept things tight at the back and it would be Kiel who would create the more promising chances. Kiel’s second division season is only 11 days away and begins with a home game against Sandhausen. Gisdol opted for a 4-4-2 formation, but the front line lacked penetration. Gisdol made eight changes at half time before bringing on young keeper Julian Pollersbeck for his HSV debut. He was powerless as former HSV youth player Steven Lewerenz equalised to make it 2-2 (68.). But the goal by Dominik Schmidt which gave Kiel a 3-2 lead is not one he will want to see him again, after the Kiel man beat Pollersbeck (who was often way outside his box) with a shot from the halfway line. That turned the game on its head.

Pierre-Michel Lasogga came on late and scored HSV’s best goal with a crisp low shot from the edge of the area to make it 3-3 on 84 minutes. The goal glut continued and Kiel would not be denied as they struck twice in the dying minutes Sen (88.) and Awuku (90.). HSV know that there is still a lot of work to do in Längenfeld ahead of the 2017/18 season which begins next month.
