Hunt helps HSV on way to 2-1 away win

Hamburger SV won 2-1 at MSV Duisburg thanks to first-half goals from Khaled Narey and Aaron Hunt.

HSV narrowly, but deservedly, defeated MSV Duisburg 2-1 to continue their brilliant away record. Die Rothosen went ahead through Khaled Narey in a frenetic opening twenty minutes. Duisburg equalised almost immediately thanks to a volley by Gerrit Nauber before HSV hit back again with a wonderful free kick by captain Aaron Hunt. The visitors were the dominant team in the first half and controlled possession however they were unable to put the game to bed. HSV deservedly won in the end and can look forward to potentially spending Christmas top of the league.

A turbulent first half…

Hannes Wolf did not feel the need to make any changes from the 1-0 home win against SC Paderborn last Friday. Captain Aaron Hunt was fit enough to start the game despite having muscle problems in the week. He also played a big role in the opening goal as he found Lewis Holtby with a nice pass who in turn worked it towards Hee-chan Hwang who laid it on a plate for Khaled Narey to score. The lead only lasted two minutes before Gerrit Nauber volleyed home from a corner that was not cleared properly. It did not take long before HSV regained the lead and it was scored in spectacular fashion as Hunt curled in a brilliant free kick after 19 minutes. The game settled down after a mad first twenty minutes as HSV started dominated possession. This was the way the match went up until half time but Die Rothosen had that all important lead.

…and an uneventful second half

The start to the second half did not live up to that of the first. Despite this, both teams played with intensity and willingness to attack but neither side could not get a rhythm going with chances few and far between at the beginning of the second half. Hwang had the first big chance of the second half after 61 minutes when he rounded the onrushing goalkeeper but his shot was cleared off the line. The 26,500 Duisburg fans inside the Schauinsland-Reisen-Arena were hoping for a grandstand finish but they were only limited to counter attacks as HSV continued to control the flow of the game. The 4,500 travelling supporters kept pushing their players on, just as they have been doing all season. No matter how hard the home side tried, they could not find a way past the HSV defence as well as Julian Pollersbeck and they were even down to ten men before full time as Tum Albutat was shown a second yellow card for a foul on Hwang in added time. Die Rothosen held on for another away victory that keeps them unbeaten on the road so far this season and they are looking to ending 2018 on a high next weekend.
