HSV Assistant coaches extend deals

Maik Goebbels agrees a new three-year contract, whilst Andre Kilian signs on for an additional year.

Hamburger SV have extended the contracts of their two assistant managers, whose previous deals were due to expire on 30th June. 42 year-old Goebbels has signed a new three-year deal which will see him stay at the club until summer 2022. “We wanted to have a permanent assistant manager at the club, regardless of the head coach’s position. For us, it is important to have consistency in the coaching team and we are convinced that Maik can fulfill this role,” explained HSV sporting director Ralf Becker. Kilian’s extension will see no change in his role at the club, meaning that the 31-year-old’s existing contract will now expire a year later.

The pair were appointed on contracts at the start of this season to join Christian Titz, who was the coach at the time, and were kept on despite his exit on 23rd October and continued to work under current coach Hannes Wolf. Although it was an uncommon situation, both parties embraced it open-mindedly. “The way that Hannes and the two guys approached it was remarkable. There was chemistry right from the start and there was no question about whether they would like to continue working together. We’re very proud that the situation developed this way.”

Between the three of them, it certainly seems that Wolf, Goebbels and Kilian are finding a winning formula: after 13 games, HSV have amassed 10 victories, with only one draw and two defeats.
