1:1 - Draw in northern duel
HSV and Holstein Kiel drew 1-1 in a floodlit match at Hamburg's Volkspark on Saturday. Sonny Kittel's converted penalty kick was not enough for victory in the end.
Hamburger SV drew 1-1 with Holstein Kiel on Saturday (30 October). In front of 39,543 spectators at the Volksparkstadion, the Red shorts took an early lead through a penalty kick converted by Kittel (12th), which Kiel equalised immediately after the break through Pichler (46th). This draw remained until the end of this northern duel, which thus ended in a draw for the fifth time in a row, four of them 1-1 - an extraordinary series.
Early Hamburg lead...
HSV coach Tim Walter changed his starting eleven on four positions compared to the cup match against 1. FC Nürnberg. Partly out of necessity: For the injured number 1 Heuer Fernandes (capsule injury in the knee) Johansson moved between the posts, the also injured left-back Leibold (cruciate ligament tear) replaced Muheim. In addition, the coach brought in his quick wingers Jatta/Alidou for Doyle and Kaufmann - and the latter played a decisive role in the opening phase.
After Kiel had caused the first excitement of the game with Pichler's shot against the post in the 7th minute, the youngster from Hamburg started into the penalty area on the other side and was hit by KSV defender Korb. Kittel safely converted the penalty kick in the 12th minute to make it 1:0. A strong start! And the game remained entertaining, because the Reds were able to create quick turnaround moments, especially through Alidou and Jatta, but were unable to develop the necessary scoring threat. And so the Kielers remained in the game at all times, who were also always looking for the way forward and were almost rewarded shortly before the break when Bartels appeared free in front of the Hamburg goal after a counterattack, but Johansson saved with an outstanding reflex and thus kept the nil and the 1-0 lead at the break.
... and a just draw
This narrow but justified Hamburg lead at the break did not last too long after the change of ends - not even for one minute. Only 47 seconds after the restart, Pichler scored the 1:1 equaliser after a Bartels pass, which was followed by a completely open game. Kiel continued to play offensively, HSV as well, and both teams had good opportunities. Kaufmann on the Hamburg side and Arp on the Kiel side had the best opportunities in a northern duel that now knew only few breaks and hardly any midfield play.
Again and again, both teams went directly and quickly to the top, even if the clear-cut opportunities were missing in the final phase, only a Holtby shot from distance in stoppage time caused any danger. And so, in the end, the result was a 1-1 draw, which the Kielers can certainly live with better than the Hamburgers, who gave away the lead from the first half too quickly in the second period and thus recorded their fifth draw in the sixth home match of the season.
