HSV sign Jordan Torunarigha
Hamburger SV have completed the signing of centre-back Jordan Torunarigha. The 27-year-old Berlin native arrives in Hamburg on a free transfer from Belgian top-flight side KAA Gent.
HSV have bolstered their defence with the transfer of centre-back Jordan Torunarigha from Jupiler Pro League side KAA Gent. The Berlin native, who came through Hertha BSC’s academy and made his Bundesliga debut for the ‘Old Lady’, completed his medical at the UKE Athleticum on Wednesday (11th June) and subsequently signed his contract at the Volksparkstadion. Torunarigha made 145 competitive appearances for Gent over the past three and a half years across domestic and European fixtures. He previously featured 73 times for Hertha in the Bundesliga as well.

“Jordan became a key player and top performer during his time in Gent,” said Claus Costa, director of football at HSV. “We’ve been following his progress both on and off the pitch and are now pleased that he’s chosen to take the next step in his career with HSV.” Comfortable on the ball and extremely physical and agile, the centre-back, who has played almost 300 professional games and won 30 caps for Germany’s youth teams, as well as one cap for Nigeria’s senior side, is set to take on an important role at HSV.
“Jordan is a clear-headed, professional and mature character,” said HSV board member for sport Stefan Kuntz, who previously coached the centre-back for both Germany U21s and the Olympics side. “He has taken another significant step forward in terms of his development, characterised by heading and tackling prowess, which combine well with his good turn of pace. Jordan matches our profile of requirements thanks to his all-round defensive capabilities and ability to play out from the back.”
The 27-year-old himself is looking forward to his new role in a familiar environment: “I know the Bundesliga already and I’m really looking forward to returning to play in this special league once again, especially for a club with the tradition of HSV.” Torunarigha was fully convinced in making the move to Hamburg. “The people in charge made a great deal of effort to instil me with a positive feeling. I can’t wait to get to know my new teammates, the coaches and other staff, the fans and the city. I aim to utilise all my strengths and experience to assist us in enjoying a successful season together, in which we achieve our goals.”
