HSV sign Nicolas Capaldo

Hamburger SV have secured the services of central midfielder Nicolas Capaldo. The 26-year-old Argentine joins from Austrian side RB Salzburg. On Thursday (10th July), the former Argentina U23 international successfully completed his medical at the UKE Athleticum and then signed his new contract at the Volksparkstadion. “We are very pleased that with the signing of Nicolas, we have completed another part of squad planning,” said board member for sport Stefan Kuntz. “He brings a lot of energy, mentality and temperament, all of which our team will benefit from in the Bundesliga, both on and off the pitch. In addition, at 26, he is at the peak age for a footballer.”

Director of football Claus Costa also praised the qualities Capaldo possesses: “Nico is a very active central midfielder who plays with great passion and at a high intensity. We are convinced that his dynamism, ball recovery ability and bold playing style will strengthen our team.”

Nicolas Capaldo was born on 14th September 1998 in Santa Rosa, Argentina. He began his football journey as a child and teenager at the local side Club Deportivo Mac Allister (2004-2014), before moving to the youth academy of Boca Juniors at the age of 16. The 1.77-metre-tall right-footed player made his debut for their first team in February 2019. After a total of 65 competitive appearances for Boca Juniors, with whom he won the league and cup double in 2020, Capaldo moved to RB Salzburg for the 2021/22 season. Over the past four years, the midfielder played 126 competitive matches for the Austrians (15 goals, 10 assists), including 22 games in the UEFA Champions League. During this time, Capaldo also celebrated a double with Salzburg in 2022 and another Austrian league title in the 2022/23 season. The Argentine will wear the number 24 shirt in Hamburg and is excited and determined ahead of his new challenge: “HSV is a big club. I am very happy to be here now. I’m a player who brings a lot of energy to the game and gives 100% every minute. I can’t wait to start training with my new teammates and hopefully have a successful season.”
