Match Preview vs Schalke 04
The second half of the season begins with the final game of 2021 as Schalke 04 visit the Volksparkstadion for the first time on 2. Bundesliga business.
Back to winning ways for both sides last time will give both that little more incentive go out and end 2021 on a high.
Both sides started the season off on the opening day of the season at the Veltins Arena and will commence the second half of the season at the Volksparkstadion. A 3-1 victory in favour of the Red Shorts was record in late July with Tim Walter and his team getting off to a positive start.
Schalke, like many others experience some difficult opening stages to life in the 2. Bundesliga but have recently picked up the pace and are now sitting comfortably looking upwards rather than what is below.
It’s Third vs Fourth, both teams level on points! A Christmas Cracker is surely in store!
Opponents Focus:
Schalke endured a disappointed year all round last season, and similar to us are eagerly grasping for that direct promotion back to the top flight. A side that changed their manager 5 times last season, is beginning to find consistency under Dimitrios Grammozis.
Coming into the season, like many others do, Schalke found it took time to adapt to the 2. Liga way of life. In their favour, Simon Terodde, 2. Liga’s all time goalscorer and former HSV player was recruited into their ranks. 12 goals in 14 appearances for the striker although, he will definitely be out for the game vs HSV along with fellow goalscorer Marius Bülter.
A mixed bag of form but a better run of form for Schalke coming into this game. 9 goals in two victories over SV Sandhausen (5-2) and 1.FC Nürnberg (4-1) sandwiched between is the disappointing 2-1 defeat at the Millentor against St Pauli. A tough opponent to still head to the Volksparkstadion on Saturday though.
HSV News:
A fourth home match in five games with the potential of four straight home victories for HSV. An Aggregate score of 10-1 in the last home games surely gives HSV that added home advantage coming into a very tricky tie.
On the new personel situation for the upcoming game, Head coach Tim Walter said: "Ludovit Reis slipped in training today and fell on his lower back, so we sent him in as a precaution. Daniel Heuer Fernandes is still on schedule, he is doing his individual programme. Bakery Jatta could return after his flu infection.
The Match Facts :
Real traditional duel
Hamburger SV and FC Schalke 04 will meet for the 130th time on Saturday. Only against Werder Bremen, FC St. Pauli, FC Bayern München and VfB Stuttgart have the Red Shorts played more games. In the Bundesliga, there were 100 duels with a balanced record (38/24/38). HSV won the premiere in 2. Bundesliga in the second league opener of the current season with 3:1 at Schalke. Robert Glatzel (53rd), Moritz Heyer (86th) and Bakery Jatta (90th) turned the game in favour of the Red Shorts after an early goal by former HSV player Simon Terodde (7th).
Good record against Bundesliga relegation teams
As a second-division team, the Rothosen can look back on an almost flawless record against Bundesliga relegation teams. In 14 duels, there have been ten wins, three draws and only one defeat - in the 2019/20 season when playing away in Stuttgart (2:3). At home in the Volksparkstadion, HSV have not lost a point against Bundesliga relegation teams, winning all six games so far with 19:5 goals.
Third return for Grammozis
Between 1998 and 2000, Dimitrios "Dimi" Grammozis worked as a defensive midfielder for HSV, and after the end of his active career, the German-Greek embarked on a coaching career. This has led him back to the Volksparkstadion twice so far, and the 43-year-old remained unbeaten in both comparisons: on 16 March 2019, he won 3:1 as coach of SV Darmstadt 98, and on Matchday 1 2019/20, he fought for a 1-1 draw with the "Lilies".
