0–1 – HSV Suffer Late Defeat at SC Paderborn
In a Bundesliga match short on clear-cut chances for long periods, an outstanding Heuer Fernandes kept the Rothosen in game with several fine saves, before Rayan Philippe scored the decisive goal for the hosts in the 88th minute.
Hamburger SV suffered a 1–0 (0–0) defeat away to SC Paderborn in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 24 October. In front of a sold-out crowd of 15,000 at the Home Deluxe Arena in Paderborn, the two sides played out an evenly matched but largely uneventful first half on Matchday 7, managing just two shots on target each. After the break, the hosts created the better chances but were denied several times by Heuer Fernandes, with the post also coming to the visitors’ rescue on one occasion. Just as the match looked set to end in a draw, substitute Philippe struck in the 88th minute to make it 1–0.

Vieira forced off early
Compared with the 1–0 win over VfB Stuttgart, HSV head coach Polzin made two changes to his starting XI. El Ouahdi returned in place of Lemke after recovering from an infection, while Nandja replaced the injured Capaldo, who was suffering from muscular problems.
The Rothosen made a cautious start and, much as they had against Stuttgart, allowed the hosts to manage the majority of possession. Ulrich registered Paderborn’s first attempt with a long-range effort in the third minute, before Vieira tried his luck from around 20 metres in the tenth minute. His shot, however, was blocked. To make matters worse, the Portuguese midfielder was forced off through injury shortly afterwards, with a bandage applied to his thigh. Stange came on in his place.
After around 20 minutes, the hosts created the first real moment of danger in Daniel Heuer Fernandes’ penalty area. Obermair delivered a dangerous free-kick from the left edge of the box towards the far post, but Scheller failed to make contact.
It was also Paderborn’s best chance of the match up to that point, with the hosts struggling to make their territorial advantage count. The Rothosen, meanwhile, looked solid defensively but offered little threat going forward themselves. Möller Wolfe headed a Muheim corner wide of the left post from around six yards out in the 39th minute. Scheller then made a crucial intervention to prevent El Ouahdi from collecting a pass from Möller Wolfe, despite the HSV player being unmarked near the penalty spot.
After a largely uneventful first half, the teams went into the dressing rooms with the score still goalless.

Paderborn turn up the pressure after the break
The hosts emerged from the interval with renewed energy and immediately created the first major chance of the match. Heuer Fernandes produced an outstanding reflex save on the line to keep out Castaneda’s effort in the 47th minute.
Paderborn continued to look increasingly dangerous in the following minutes, but the Rothosen stood solid with a disciplined defensive performance, dealing with each dangerous situation as it arose. In the 64th minute, HSV finally had an opportunity to threaten at the other end. However, Nadir sent a free-kick from a promising central position just outside the penalty area over the crossbar.
The match became increasingly chaotic as both sides made a series of substitutions. Polzin was once again forced into a change through injury, with Nadir suffering a thigh problem. Paderborn adapted better to the changing rhythm of the game and created further opportunities. Heuer Fernandes first made another fine save to deny Castaneda in the 73rd minute, before Curda struck narrowly wide of the left-hand post in the following attack.
At the other end, Adeline broke dangerously into the penalty area, but Götze intervened at the last moment to intercept his low cross, which was intended for three unmarked HSV players arriving in support.
Given the balance of possession and chances, HSV could have been content with a share of the points. Paderborn, however, continued to push for a winner in the closing stages.
And the hosts got their reward through a cruel twist of fate for HSV. Rayan Philippe, the Paderborn player on loan from Hamburg who had come on as a substitute earlier in the match, gave Heuer Fernandes no chance with a powerful, low shot from the edge of the penalty area into the bottom-left corner in the 88th minute.
The Rothosen threw everything forward in response, even sending goalkeeper Heuer Fernandes up for set-pieces, but they were unable to find an equaliser. After three consecutive Bundesliga victories, HSV's winning run came to an end.
