0-3: HSV lose in Dortmund

On Tuesday night (04.04.17) HSV lost 0-3 away to Borussia Dortmund on Bundesliga matchday 27. The goals were scored by Castro (13.). Kagawa (81.) and Aubameyang (90 + 2).

The 3-0 score line does not fairly reflect the game. The home side made an attacking start to the game and took the lead through a Gonzalo Castro free kick on 13 minutes. HSV though were not too daunted by that early setback and began to get a foothold in the game, creating decent chances of their own. The Rothosen looked impressive after the break and kept the home side at bay for long periods in front of a capacity crowd of 81,360 inside the amazing floodlit Signal Iduna Park. In  the end Dortmund’s many chances led to late goals through Shinji Kagawa (81.) and Bundesliga top scorer extending Borussia’s fine unbeaten home run to 34 games.

Open game for long periods…

HSV coach Markus Gisdol was forced into several changes to the team which beat Cologne 2-1 at home last time out. Top scorer Müller missed out with a knee injury. His place in the team went to Gregoritsch. The changes at the back were more dramatic. Without injured first team regulars Papadopoulos, Jung and Djourou meant that Ekdal had to help out at the back. As expected the home side began the game with high tempo and at times mesmerising passing. It would however take a set piece to break the deadlock. Castro wrong-footed HSV keeper Adler with a free kick on 13 minutes. Instead of shooting over the wall he chose the keeper corner with a crisp shot to make it 1-0 to Borussia.

Until then Adler had saved everything fired at him. Danger man Aubameyang found himself one on one with Adler on two occasions with the experienced stopper coming out on top both times. The visitors tried to get forward when they could and broke through the Dortmund defence twice within the opening half hour. Wood bore down on home stopper Bürki only to be denied by him each time. The longer the half went on the better the visitors began to look, cheered on by their massive contingent of travelling support. HSV found a way to deal with Dortmund’s all out attack and many thought that Borussia were slightly fortunate to go into the break with a slender 1-0 lead.

HSV began the second half with the confidence that they had ended the first with. Lots of possession and always keen to get forward, only for Dortmund to begin building up some pressure of their own, creating four gilt-edged chances which the Rothosen managed to thwart with a collective effort. The 5,000 travelling Hamburg faithful were as usual right behind their team and looked on as Wood and Kostic missed several decent half chances to equalise. It was an entertaining game in an amazing atmosphere.

Both teams continued their attacking approach with Borussia hoping to put the game to bed with a second goal while HSV fought hard to equalise. Gisdol tried to liven up his front line by bringing on Hunt and Lasogga. That ploy brought more goalmouth action but also created the danger of Dortmund’s lightning quick counter attacks could catch them out. In the end Dortmund’s class and multitude of chances won the day for them with Kagawa netting on 81 minutes and Aubameyang scoring with almost the final kick of the game in the first minute of injury time. There was more bitter news for HSV as Ekdal injured himself as Dortmund scored the second goal.  Adler suffered the same fate slightly later on. It was a bitter end to an entertaining football night in Dortmund.
