0-3 – HSV lose to Eintracht Frankfurt

HSV lost their Bundesliga matchday 8 clash 0-3 on Friday night. Hamburg’s bad luck began with an unluky own goal by Lewis Holtby.

HSV failed to win their fourth home game of the season on Friday night (22.10), losing 0-3 to Eintracht Frankfurt in front of 52,258 inside the floodlit Volksparkstadion. An own goal by home midfielder Lewis Holtby began the demise. Rothosen right back Dennis Diekmeier was sent off on 56 minutes for a second yellow card. A man up, Eintracht increased their lead to 3-0 through Shani Tarashaj (60.) and substitute Haris Seferovic (69.).

Own goal breaks the deadlock...

Markus Gisdol sent out his team for his first home game in charge in an attacking 4-2-3-1 system. The new coach opted for a three man midfield (Kostic/Halilovic/Müller) just behind sole striker Lasogga. Alen Halilovic made his first start and missed a good chance just before the break. The trio tried to get the home attack going during the opening minutes, but once again there was a lack of decent scoring chances, mainly because of the solid looking Frankfurt back line which at times consisted of six men in a line instead of the usual three or four. Niggly fouls began to creep in and match referee Perl had his hands full, seemly blowing for the tiniest of infringements. The pitch was soft and soggy following recent torrential rainfall in Hamburg and took its toll on the game and the players. The only shot of the game until then was a harmless effort from 20 metres by Frankfurt’s Fabian. It took an unfortunate own goal to break the deadlock. Holtby lost possession while Hamburg moved forward, allowing the visitors to counter attack. Holtby’s efforts to make good his mistake ended in his being the final touch of the ball before it crossed his own goal line (35.).

... to begin the demise

After going behind to such an unnecessary goal, the home side created a couple of half chances before the break which were missed by Halilovic and Müller. HSV emerged for the second half hoping to turn things around, but things worked out differently than expected. Things turned bad, very bad. Gisdol reverted to a 4-4-2 in order to increase pressure up front, but only two minutes after making the switch, Hamburg right back Diekmeier picked up a second booking and was sent off on 56 minutes. That blow of course put paid to any plans made by the home coach who had lost key man Spahic to injury moments before. Eintracht took advantage of Hamburg’s confusion to score two further goals inside ten minutes to cruise to a 3-30 victory, leaving shell-shocked Rothosen wondering what next?
