HSV celebrated their first home win of the season and what a win it was! The Rothosen edged a tens and passionate game 1-0 against FC Augsburg in front of 45,793 at the freezing cold Volksparkstadion in Hamburg on Saturday afternoon (10.12.16) on Bundesliga matchday 14. The crucial winning goal was scored by Filip Kostic after 68 minutes.Hamburg midfield battler Lewis Holtby was shown a straight red card on 44 minutes. Augsburg’s Dominik Kohr followed suit on 66 minutes for a second booking. The game was a real blood and thunder affair with both teams flying into tackles all over the pitch. It was a battle of wills which the home side just about edged. What drama!
Holtby sees red...
Home coach Markus Gisdol had the luxury of picking the same team for the fourth consecutive game. That consistency saw the Rothosen produced a steady performance. Apart from a slight mistake early on the home side looked in charge. HSV also looked good going forward but were unable to take the chances created at first. Gregoritsch alone missed three half chances in the opening half an hour.
Müller found himself advancing alone on FCA keeper Hitz after his marker Stafylidis had stumbled. Match referee Daniel Siebert blew his whistle though after spotting an infingement which will remain his own little secret as to why. There had been no contact whatsoever between Müller and Stafylidis. On 44 minutes a scuffle with Kohr who went at Holtby, which ended up with only HSV man Holtby being sent off for an elbow. The game was nicely poised at 0-0 at the break with the Rothosen a man down.
... and Kostic scores winning goal
That changed HSV’s approach to the second half. Augsburg, who had been very passive before the break began to venture forward, creating a great scoring chance for Turkish veteran Altintop who lost out in a one on one situation with home keeper Mathenia (52.). That miss kept the Rothosen in the game cheered on by the lowest home crowd of the season. Justice was finally served as Augsburg*s Kohr picked up a second booking and was sent off. Two minutes later HSV scored the only goal of the game.
Müller took advantage of Augsburg’s moment of doubt by approaching the edge of the area, leaving three opponets in his wake before drilling a shot against the right hand upright. Luckily Kostic was on hand to put away the rebound to open the scoring (68.). HSV looked solid as they defended that slender lead. They never allowed Augsburg to properly threaten again and ran out the deserved 1-0 winners. It was party time after the final whistle as the team celebrated the first home win of the season with the fans. Next Saturday (17.12.16, 3.30 PM) HSV travel south, where they lock horns with Mainz on matchday 15.
