1-3 - Latza hat trick too good for HSV in Mainz
HSV’s four game unbeaten run ended on Saturday afternoon, as they lost 1-3 to 1. FSV Mainz 05, in front of 30,179 at the Opel-Arena. Bobby Wood had opened the scoring for the visitors, but Mainz struck back through a hat trick by their defensive midfielder Danny Latza, who had not scored a league goal for Mainz until today.
HSV lost 1-3 away to Mainz on Bundesliga matchday 15 on Saturday afternoon (17.12). Hamburg travelled south in confident mood on the back of a four game unbeaten run and took the lead on 21 minutes through USA goal getter Bobby Wood. But then came Danny Latza who single handedly put the Rothosen to the sword with an amazing hat trick. The defensive midfielder had not scored for Mainz in 33 appearances, but put that right by scoring all three of his goals from the same position – the edge of the HSV box (35., 56., 67.). The game was on an even keel for long periods and in truth the Rothosen might have enjoyed a different result had a 30th minute chip by Nicolai Müller gone in instead of dropping onto the crossbar. Like we said: Then came Latza.
Wood opens the scoring...
Hamburg coach Markus Gisdol was forced to make changes to his team after being able to pick the same team for his previous four matches, with suspended duo Djourou and Holtby being replaced by fit again central defender Emir Spahic and American forward Bobby Wood respectively. Gregoritsch played a central role in attacking midfield. The visitors used both wings going forward, with Kostic left and Müller down the right. On of those attacks produced the opening goal on 21 minutes as Ostrzolek passed on a ball from Müller who in turn found Wood, who coolly finished to break the deadlock (21.).
The visitors almost doubled their lead five minutes later, but a chip by Müller struck the crossbar and the massive contingent of travelling HSV faithful were screaming for a penalty as the rebound was scrambled away (26.). Things then took a dramatic turn for the worse for Gisdol’s men as the home side equalised through Latza, following a poor attempted clearence by Douglas Santos. It was more than annoying that instead of being 2-0 ahead, the Rothosen were only 1-1 at the half time break.
... Latza scores a hat trick
Both sides began cautiously as the second half got underway and it would be the home side who would strike first – through that man Latza, who added to has first ever goal for Mainz in the first half by adding two more after the break. O Each goal came after the visitors failed to clear their lines and the gaols were scored from an almost identical position on the edge of the Hamburg area (56., 67.). The third goal in particular made it game over for HSV who continued to fight hard but never looked likely to score again. So Hamburg once again lost a game after taking the lead after allowing their opponents a way back into a game. Now the team focus on matchday 16 as old rivals Schalke visit the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg, for a floodlit encounter next Tuesday night (20.12.16, 8.00 PM).
