1–3 – Unfortunate DFB-Pokal exit for HSV against Frankfurt
Despite a determined performance and numerous decent chances, the Rothosen left the pitch at the Volksparkstadion on the losing side. Moffi pulled one back in the 79th minute after Koch (56'), Burkardt (71') and Ebnoutalib (75') had scored for the visitors.
Hamburger SV were knocked out of the DFB-Pokal in the second round by Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday evening (27 October). In front of a sell-out crowd of 57,000 at the Volksparkstadion, the Rothosen suffered an unfortunate 3–1 loss. HSV created the better chances, particularly towards the end of the first half, but were unable to reward their attacking efforts with a goal. Instead, the visitors struck three times after the break, with Koch (56'), Burkardt (71') and substitute Ebnoutalib (75') all finding the net for the Eagles. Moffi pulled one back for the Rothosen in the 79th minute to make it 3–1, and HSV created several more clear-cut chances before the final whistle, but none found the back of the net.

Compared with the 1–0 defeat in Paderborn, head coach Polzin made four changes. With Nadir, Vieira and Poulsen injured, Sambi Lokonga, Grönbaek and Moffi came into the starting line-up. Tangvik also replaced Heuer Fernandes in goal.
HSV allowed Frankfurt to dictate play in the opening stages, giving the visitors considerably more possession, although they struggled to penetrate the dangerous areas. The first chance, however, fell to the Rothosen. Following a corner, Grönbaek delivered a cross from the left towards the far post, where Nandja rose to meet it with a header but narrowly missed the target (6'). Shortly afterwards, Muheim opted against shooting from the left-hand side, just outside the penalty area, and instead played a further cross towards Adeline, who was unable to control the ball inside the box (7'). Both teams subsequently remained well organised and allowed few chances. In the 22nd minute, Omari slipped a pass through the middle to Moffi, who was denied in a one-on-one with Maluze on the right-hand side of the penalty area and was unable to get a shot away. Two minutes later, the Volksparkstadion erupted as El Ouahdi received the ball from Grönbaek on the edge of the box and immediately let fly. The Moroccan's powerful effort sailed over Atubolu's crossbar.
HSV came close to taking the lead in the 29th minute. Sambi Lokonga played the ball on to Grönbaek inside the penalty area, and the latter attempted to poke it past the opposing goalkeeper from close range, but his effort narrowly missed to the right. At the other end, Bornauw produced a last-ditch sliding tackle to dispossess Burkardt, who would otherwise have had a clear shot at goal with only Tangvik to beat (31'). HSV turned up the pressure in the closing stages of the first half in search of the opening goal. First, El Ouahdi drove into the penalty area surrounded by several Frankfurt players before going down following a body check from Koch. However, referee Stieler did not consider the challenge a foul (35'). HSV academy graduate Nandja then delivered a cross from the right which found Bornauw in the centre, but his header from point-blank range sailed over the bar (42'). Shortly afterwards, El Ouahdi once again surged towards the opposition goal but took too long to decide whether to shoot or pass. The Moroccan lost his footing and the chance was gone (45'). The teams went into the dressing rooms with the score still goalless.

At the start of the second half, 18-year-old HSV academy graduate Jason Bissi Mouelle made his competitive debut for the club. The defender replaced the injured Bornauw.
Shortly afterwards, SGE were fortunate that a player who had already been booked escaped a second yellow card for a heavy challenge on Möller Wolfe inside the opposition penalty area (48'). To make matters worse, Frankfurt took the lead soon afterwards. The visitors kept the ball alive around the edge of the Rothosen's penalty area before Uzun delivered a cross towards the far post. Burkardt headed the ball back across goal to Koch, who only had to get his head to it to put Frankfurt 1–0 ahead (56').
HSV responded immediately. First, Muheim unleashed a left-footed effort from distance, which Atubolu only managed to gather at the second attempt (59'). Then Moffi came agonisingly close to equalising with a header from point-blank range following a corner, but the ball failed to find the net (63'). The Rothosen were then dealt a bitter double blow as Frankfurt scored twice in quick succession. In the 71st minute, Götze delivered a cross from the right-hand corner of the penalty area towards Burkardt at the edge of the six-yard box. The striker got the better of Nandja and finished from close range to make it 2–0. Just four minutes later, recently introduced substitute Ebnoutalib made it 3–0. At the end of a passing move inside the penalty area, Chaibi squared the ball to the striker, who controlled it centrally before finishing to extend Frankfurt's lead.
Despite the daunting scoreline, Hamburg continued to push for a way back into the game – and their efforts paid off. Moffi reduced the deficit to 3–1 in the 79th minute. The number nine was on hand to turn home the rebound after Daka had tested Atubolu, who could only parry the initial effort. Shortly afterwards, Uzun struck the crossbar with a long-range effort following a square pass from Chaibi (84'). HSV created another huge opportunity in stoppage time, with Daka going close. After a superb cross from El Ouahdi, the forward launched himself into a diving header, forcing Atubolu to stretch low to his right to keep the ball out (90+1').
The final whistle sounded shortly afterwards at the Volksparkstadion, confirming HSV's elimination from the second round of the DFB-Pokal.
