1:2 - HSV loose unlucky in Berlin
HSV came out 2-1 losers against Hertha BSC after a competitive match at the Olympia Stadion. Jann-Fiete Arp scored with 73 minutes on the clock but HSV couldn’t cancel out Hertha’s 17th and 50th minute headers.
HSV succumbed to a 2-1 defeat against Hertha BSC on matchday 10. The game was evenly contested, but the Rothosen defence switched off during two corners, as Hertha scored one either side of half-time. Jann-Fiete Arp, making only his second ever Bundesliga appearance, pulled one back for HSV but it came too late and he couldn’t prevent his team heading home with zero points.
Early setback
Markus Gisdol fielded a team with the same formation as for the Bayern match. There were two changes in personnel though, as Kostic played on the left wing in the place of Hunt, while Ekdal came in for the suspended Jung. The three-at-the-back formation kept Hertha at bay for most of the first half, but it didn’t prevent the Blue-Whites taking the lead with 17 minutes on the clock, as Plattenhardt rose well to glance a header into the side netting. Santos had HSV’s best chance of the first half, receiving the ball outside the box from a well-worked corner, but his curling effort was tipped millimetres wide by Jarstein. The first half had a draw written all over it, but the Rothosen nevertheless found themselves a goal to the bad with 45 on the clock.
… late push
The second half started as the first had ended. Again, a corner led to a Hertha goal. Plattenhardt turned provider, whipping in a corner-ball that Rekik headed in. This led Gisdol to turn to the bench and the head coach brought on Ito and Arp for Wood and Ekdal. Hunt came on for Hunt ten minutes later. The substitutions brought much-need offensive impetus to HSV’s game and Arp pulled one back for the away side in the 73rd minute. The 17-year old volleyed it in off the inside of the post after a Diekmeier cross was controlled by Papadopoulos. The last 15 minutes were almost entirely spent in the Hertha half, as HSV applied continued pressure, but the team’s effort wasn’t ultimately rewarded and the match ended 2-1.
