4-0 - HSV reach DFB Cup round 3
HSV reached round 3 of the 2016/17 DFB Cup on Tuesday night, by way of a 4-0 win at third division side Halleschen FC. A first half brace from Bobby Wook followed by second half strikes by Lasogga and Waldschmidt did the business for the Bundesliga visitors.
HSV won 4-0 away to Halleschen FC in round 2 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday night (25.10). The score does not fairly reflect the tremendous efforts put in by the home side, cheered on by a 14,000-strong capacity crowd. 1,400 HSV fans made the trip after the club sold the ticket allocation within minutes. USA striker Bobby Wood struck twice before the break (8., 43.), while Pierre-Michel Lasogga (57.) and Luca Waldschmidt (82.) netted for the visitors after the break.
Working plan
Markus Gisdol said between the 0-3 Bundesliga home defeat to Frankfurt at the weekend and Tuesday night’s in Halle. The new HSV boss changed his playing system again for the trip to eastern Germany. Gisdol opted for a 4-3-3 system, the midfield trio consisted of Sakai, Jung and Ostrzolek hoping to win extra ball in midfield before quickly feeding the front line of Wood, Kostic and Lasogga. The plan worked well on two fronts: Firstly, the Rothosen looked at home playing the system and that early confidence led to the opening goal of the game. On 8 minutes the visitors won back the ball at a Halle corner. From there a swift counter attack was launched which ended with Wood sliding the ball home much to the delight of the travelling Hamburg hordes. Halle then had more of the ball but could find no way through a solid looking Hamburg back line. As half time approached HSV won the ball back again and hit Halle on the break once again Wood was perfectly placed to give his side a 2-0 lead which they took into the break with them (43.).
Decisive Lasogga strike
Halle continued to try to press forward as the second half began, but it turned out to be more of the same from the visitors who defended tightly and always looked dangerous on the counter attack. Lasogga put the game to bed with a strike around the hour mark. The fact that Waldschmidt made it 4-0 at the end, scoring with his first touch of the ball just 17 seconds after coming on rounded off the welcome win nicely. The draw for round 3 of the DFB Cup will be made live on German TV on Wednesday night (26.10).
