Aboubaka Soumahoro joins Saint-Étienne on loan
The 20-year-old defender will spend the remainder of the season with French second-tier side AS Saint-Étienne.
Aboubaka Soumahoro will leave Hamburger SV on a temporary basis. The 20-year-old defender has joined AS Saint-Étienne on loan until the end of the season, returning to his native France. The move is designed to give the left-footer more regular playing time than he has had recently. Saint-Étienne were relegated from Ligue 1 last season and currently sit fifth in Ligue 2 after 21 matchdays. “Shortly before the end of the transfer window, the opportunity arose to send Abou out on loan. The prospects of regular game time are better for him at Saint-Étienne than they are with us at the moment, and that’s a key factor in his continued development. We’ll continue to follow Abou’s progress closely and wish him all the best during his time in France,” said sporting director Claus Costa.
Soumahoro joined HSV from Paris FC almost exactly a year ago. Shortly after arriving in Hamburg, the France U20 international suffered an injury that ruled him out for the entire second half of the 2024/25 season. He eventually made his competitive debut for HSV on matchday 3 of the current campaign in the 5-0 defeat in Munich. To date, he has made five appearances for the club.
