Austrian national team come calling for Hinterseer

HSV’s new man will be in the Austrian national team squad for their upcoming games against Latvia and Poland, his first call-up in almost three years.

It was Lukas Hinterseer’s father who was able to break the good news. Guido Hinterseer informed his son that he’d been called up to the Austrian national side via a screenshot of the squad that had been named by Franco Foda for the upcoming European qualifiers. A real surprise and a comeback that had been a long time in the making. For the 28-year-old, who made his international debut under Marcel Koller against the USA in a 1-0 win in November 2013 before making eleven subsequent appearances, hasn’t played for his country in almost three years. “For the past three years I was always one of the reserves, but never got an actual call-up. I really wasn’t expecting it, which makes it that much nicer. It shows that I’ve done a few things right over the past few games,” the striker told HSV.de, finding it difficult to contain his excitement.

Focus on Hannover – then international duty

15th November 2016 was the last time that Hinterseer wore the famous red and white eagle on his chest, in a goalless friendly against Slovakia. With three goals and two assists in his first five competitive appearances for HSV, including a goal and two assists most recently against Karlsruhe, the striker had obviously made Franco Foda aware of his abilities in front of goal. After being on call for the majority of the past three years, the Kitzbühel native will be hoping that he manages to add to his current tally of twelve appearances against Latvia on the 6th September in Salzburg or in Warsaw on the 9th September against Robert Lewandowski and co. The striker wants to enter the international break on form, looking to carry on his good streak against Hannover: “I’m fully focussed on the game at the weekend and will only turn my attention to the national team next week, when I travel down to Salzburg, really looking forward to my time with the national team.”
