"Everything went wrong for us"
HSV crashed out of the DFB Cup in round one against third division side VfL Osnabrück. HSV.de gathered the following reaction to the bitter defeat at the sold out Bremer Brücke stadium.
After reaching the quarter final stage of the competition last season, HSV were unceremoniously dumped out in round one against VfL Osnabrück in front of a capacity crowd at the Bremer Brücke stadium on Sunday afternoon. Rothosen sport boss Jens Todt told HSV.de after the game: „We will not question everything after only one game.“ He was not the only Hamburg protagonist seething after the cup shock. HSV.de were told the following after full time.
Jens Todt: It was a disappointing performance. We had plenty of clear cut chances during the first half but failed to take any of them. It felt like Osnabrück reached our goal three times and scored on every occasion. When that happens you see what kind of atmosphere it creates in a stadium like this. The consolation goal came far too late. Osnabrück left everything on the pitch and we didn’t We have been brought down to earth with a bump a week before the start of the Bundesliga season.
André Hahn: We spoke during pre-season about the importance of taking chances. But when you don’t take them and defend poorly one thing leads to another and things go in the wrong direction. Osnabrück were clinical in front of goal. The red card should have given us an advantage but it didn’t. Osnabrück defended deep and are a good side and we didn’t take our chances. I understand that our travelling fans are angry but I hope that everyone saw that we didn’t give up.
Go Sakai: We were simply too sloppy especially in the way we conceded the goals. Me made it too easy for them to score. We prepared well and everything wwas okay until today. It is a bad result for us and our fans who took the trouble to accompany us and those who remained at home. We have to massively quickly improve for the start of the Bundesliga season.
Markus Gisdol: We began well. It might sound silly but their red card was the turning point in the game but for the wrong reasons. After that we were sloppy in the tackle, while they marked us closely and took their chances clinically. We had almost 80% possession in the second half but played to many square and back passes. We defended poorly and were also careless with passing which is why we were deservedly beaten by a very committed home side.
Joe Enochs (VfL Osnabrück coach): We focused on defending but were always prepared to get forward whenever possible which we did well. We scored at the right time and reverted to a 4-4-1 formation after we had a man sent off. It was a real nail-biter. In the end we were a little lucky but deserved to win on the whole. I wish HSV the best of luck for the new season. There are a lot of HSV fans in our region.
