Fun, games and skills: HSV’s colourful day in the Volkspark
26 players – among them birthday boy Sebastian Schonlau – took part in a lively and varied training session. Afterwards, the coaching team invited the HSV staff to a little ‘food truck festival’.
The summer returned to Hamburg this morning – at least around the Volksparkstadion. With bright sunshine and pleasant temperatures, the Rothosen completed today’s team training. 23 outfield players, including U21 youngsters Maurice Boakye and Raif Adam, as well as three goalkeepers – namely Daniel Peretz, Hannes Hermann and Bennet Schmidt (also U21) – buzzed around the training pitches in front of numerous onlookers.
Head coach Merlin Polzin didn’t have the full squad at his disposal: while Immanuel Pherai worked through his running exercises, Daniel Heuer Fernandes, Fernando Dickes, Jean-Luc Dompe, Yussuf Poulsen and Ransford Königsdörffer were all absent from training. The two aforementioned goalkeepers worked inside at the Rothosen’s training centre as their workloads were being managed, where the winger Dompe also continued his rehabilitation as a result of an ankle injury. New arrival Poulsen had to sit out again with a slight muscle strain, while forward Königsdörffer is on his way back to Hamburg after his move away fell through. “Of course he is once again part of our squad and our club. I’m upset for him, because HSV wanted to give him the chance to make that move,” explained coach Polzin while speaking to journalists. “It isn’t the first time in football that such a transfer broke down. Ransi is a consummate professional and understands how to deal with this situation. We have a positive, close relationship and we’ll discuss everything further in private. At the moment, I’m just looking forward to seeing him again.”

Today’s team training had a varied program in store. To be precise, it was – literally – a colourful affair: Various exercises, games on the big field as well as the use of so-called ‘Skillshirtz’, which are designed to develop cognitive ability (see photo above), were all on today’s agenda. The HSV players visibly enjoyed the session, with their competitive spirit and enthusiasm already on display during the warm-up. Right in the middle of it all was Sebastian Schonlau – the central defender celebrated his 31st birthday today and, along with Boakye and Adam, began his training by running through the obligatory ‘team tunnel’.

Even at the end of the more than 100-minute long training, the excitement wasn’t over for Schonlau and the team. To celebrate their new contracts and thank everyone involved for their cooperation, head coach Merlin Polzin and his assistants Loic Fave and Richard Krohn invited the whole HSV staff to a little ‘food truck festival’ on the forecourt of the stadium. The HSV coaches, squad and staff all got in the mood for the new season with burgers, burritos, Spätzle and ice cream.
The final phase of pre-season begins tomorrow on Wednesday with the five-day training camp in Spain. There especially the players will feel the summer heat with temperatures of around 35 degrees Celsius.
