Hee-Chan Hwang moves to HSV on loan

The 22-year-old forward has joined HSV on a one-year loan from RB Salzburg. The South Korean international is currently playing for his country in the Asian Games where his side have reached the final.

After Jairo Samperio’s injury, HSV have again taken to the transfer market. Hee-Chan Hwang will come to ‘Die Rotenhosen’ on a one-year loan from RB Salzburg. The 22-year old from South Korea has been with the Austrian champions since 2016. He can play both on the wing and as a centre-forward. In the last two and half years the right-footed, 1.77 metre tall Hwang has played in 86 matches and scored 29 goals (7 assists). “Hee-chan Hwang is a player who has proven his quality at international level. A lot of other European clubs have shown interest in him, however, in the last few days, there was the chance to secure him for HSV on a one-season loan. We are sure he’ll help us achieve our targets,” commented sporting director Ralf Becker.

At the age of 18 Hwang moved from Pohang Steelers to FC Liefering in Austria. A year later he was transferred to Salzburg. In the last three seasons, he has played in 59 Austrian Bundesliga matches, got 17 goals and  won the league three times. Hwang has also featured in Champions League qualifying and Europa League games. In 2017, he won Asia’s ‘Best Young player’ award. He also featured for his country in this year’s World Cup in Russia, playing in all three games, including against Germany.

Hwang is currently with the South Korea squad so will not be immediately available for HSV. The 22-year old is playing in the Asian Games. On Wednesday he played alongside former HSV star Heung-Min Son in a 3-1 semi-final win over Vietnam. On Saturday (12:30 CEST) he will play in the final against Japan. Only after the final will he return to Europe to join the HSV squad.
