HSV book their place in the DFB-Pokal round of 16
A late Glatzel penalty sealed a 1-0 away win at Heidenheim, sending HSV through to the last 16.
Hamburger SV progressed to the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal on Tuesday evening (28th October) thanks to a 1-0 victory away at 1. FC Heidenheim. The Rothosen dominated large spells of the match and played the entire second half with an extra man after Heidenheim’s Siersleben was sent off shortly before the break. Despite a 17-5 shot advantage, the winner arrived from the spot: substitute Robert Glatzel converted from 12 yards in the 83rd minute on his return to his former club to send HSV into the next round.

Plenty of early chances…
Merlin Polzin made five changes to his starting line-up following Saturday’s 1-0 home defeat to Wolfsburg. Peretz started in goal after impressing in training, Capaldo, Lokonga and Dompé were rested for load-management reasons and replaced by Torunarigha, Vieira and Rössing-Lelesiit, while Gocholeishvili returned to the XI after recovering from a facial injury sustained in training. HSV began on the front foot and created the first chances of the game. Muheim tested Ramaj from the edge of the box in the third minute, and four minutes later Königsdörffer raced through one-on-one but was denied by the Heidenheim goalkeeper. Hamburg controlled the early phases, though the tempo dipped around the quarter-hour mark with no further clear chances for either side. The next major incident arrived in the 44th minute. Elfadli released Königsdörffer with a long ball and the forward accelerated away, only to be brought down by Siersleben as the last defender. The referee showed a straight red card, leaving HSV goalless but in complete control at the break with a 6-0 shot advantage and a man more.

…and a late winner
The second half unfolded in similar fashion. Königsdörffer curled narrowly wide on 53 minutes and HSV continued to dominate territory and possession, but Heidenheim held their shape and kept chances to a minimum. Direct free-kicks provided the main threat for a spell, with Vuskovic and Vieira both forcing saves. Then came the decisive moment ten minutes from time. Vieira was caught by Niehues inside the box, and although the contact was far from clear-cut, referee Brand pointed to the spot. Glatzel took responsibility and fired home confidently on 83 minutes to make it 1-0 against his former side. Heidenheim pushed forward late on, but HSV defended with commitment, blocking shots and winning headers until the final whistle – which arrived after almost eight minutes of stoppage time. A gritty cup performance, a clean sheet and a place in the round of 16 secured.
