HSV extends Claus Costa’s contract as Director of Football
Hamburger SV can announce that the club has extended the contract of Director of Football Claus Costa, previously due to expire in the summer of 2026. HSV Board Member for Sport Stefan Kuntz: “Claus has made a vital contribution to the club’s achievement of a return to the Bundesliga. I’ve been confident for a while now that it would be the best move to extend his tenure.”
Hamburger SV and Director of Football Claus Costa are delighted to announce that their partnership will continue into the future beyond next summer. “Over the last 18 months or so, I’ve been more than convinced by Claus’ know-how and the work he’s done here – both through his incredible understanding of the market and his extensive network in the field, as well as through his day-to-day involvement with the team, defined by the values of diligence and teamwork,” said HSV Board Member for Sport Stefan Kuntz. “Claus has made a vital contribution to the club’s achievement of a return to the Bundesliga and, more recently, played a huge role in a successful rebuild of the squad in a very short period. I’ve been confident for a while now that it would be the best move to extend his tenure.”

“It remains an absolute privilege to have the opportunity to carry out this role and represent a club of such immense stature as HSV. I can actively feel the significant degree of trust placed in me by Stefan, from whose incredible wealth of experience I profit every day. Our goal-oriented work beyond just the demands of the transfer window and the open, occasionally contentious, but always constructive exchanges that we share throughout the year are things that I treasure deeply,” said Costa, who joined HSV from Leverkusen as head of the club’s scouting department in 2019 before being appointed Director of Football in March 2023. “Despite setbacks on the pitch over the previous few years, we’ve been able to successfully develop a fantastic sense of togetherness at the club. The amazing support we’ve received from everyone behind the scenes, a close working relationship with the coaching staff and the great degree of trust we enjoy from the club directors and the supervisory board have been indispensable in this success, and together we’ve finally been able to achieve a return to the Bundesliga.”

Born on 15th June 1984 in Fürstenfeldbruck in the vicinity of Munich, Costa began his professional footballing career in 2003 after academy spells with TuS Wengern, Borussia Dortmund and VfL Bochum. After 13 years encompassing 55 second-division and 92 third-division appearances (for VfL Bochum, Fortuna Düsseldorf and VfL Osnabrück, among others), the midfielder went on to become a member of the coaching staff at Viktoria Köln, before shifting his focus to club management work by joining Bayer 04 Leverkusen as a scout. Having joined HSV in 2019, Costa has continually worked to develop the team and represents a significant factor in the Rothosen’s successful promotion last season through his work to assemble the squad. The club is looking forward to continuing to work with Costa to take the next steps on our development journey after his contract extension. “I’m highly motivated to further carve out a positive path forward for the club and to work with the board, the coaching staff, the squad and everyone behind the scenes to firmly re-establish Hamburger SV as a Bundesliga side,” said Costa.
