HSV leave it late to draw 1-1 with BVB
Deep into stoppage time – in the last of seven additional minutes, to be precise – Königsdörffer headed in an equaliser for HSV to make it 1-1 and ensure that his side come away from the clash with Champions League side Borussia Dortmund with a well-deserved and much-celebrated point.
On Saturday (8th November), HSV played out a 1-1 draw with Borussia Dortmund. At a sold-out Volksparkstadion, the visitors took the lead in the 64th minute through Chukwuemeka after the Rothosen were unlucky not to strike first in the first half, with Capaldo hitting the bar. HSV were not deterred by going behind, though, and threw everything they had at the Champions League participants, eventually reaping their reward in the seventh minute of added time when Königsdörffer made it 1-1 with a powerful header to spark jubilation in the stands at the Volksparkstadion. Not many draws have been celebrated as much as this one on what was a crazy afternoon of football.

Capaldo hits the bar…
The suspended attackers Vieira and Pherai were unavailable to Merlin Polzin for the clash against BVB. HSV’s head coach also had to do without injured centre-backs Omari and Elfadli. As a result, the Rothosen’s three-man backline consisted of Vuskovic, Capaldo and Torunarigha. The latter neutralised Dortmund’s first threatening opportunity of the match in the fifth minute. The visitors set the tone at the beginning of the encounter and Svensson had a shot on goal which was blocked just in front of the line thanks to last-ditch defending from Torunarigha.
After that, though, HSV managed to keep things tidy in their own penalty area and recorded their first attempt through Poulsen in the 20th minute. For the most part, BVB remained the dominant team, but HSV held their ground, battled their way into the game against the Bundesliga heavyweights, and Dompé created their next promising opening after the half-hour mark. And the biggest chance of the first 45 also fell to the Rothosen, as Capaldo hit the bar with a header from Philippe’s cross just before the interval. If not for the woodwork, HSV would have been rewarded for a battling, brave first-half performance against a quality Dortmund side who, despite a few shots, were struggling to break through the hosts’ defence. Despite only having three shots to the visitors’ nine, Polzin’s team fought hard and earned a well-deserved small victory, heading into the break with a very respectable 0-0 scoreline.

…and Königsdörffer heads HSV to a point
HSV also began the second half highly motivated. A shot straight away, followed by a few crunching duels — but then came the sucker punch. BVB increased the pressure just after the hour mark, briefly pinned HSV in their own half and struck clinically from a corner situation: the hosts cleared the danger three times, but the ball kept coming back, and Chukwuemeka eventually forced it over the line from a scramble to make it 1-0 (64’).
That meant HSV now had to do more than defend with commitment – attacking intent was required. The Rothosen responded by launching their late offensive. Fifteen minutes from time, substitute Glatzel had the best chance of the second half for the hosts, but Kobel reacted brilliantly to palm his low strike away from the bottom-right corner. So the home side entered the closing stages trailing narrowly, throwing everything forward. One high ball after another flew into the Dortmund penalty area, and the very last one finally did the trick: in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Muheim whipped in a fierce delivery from the left, finding Königsdörffer, who rose above everyone and thundered his header into the far corner to make it 1-1. Pandemonium. The Volkspark exploded into celebrations and turned into a cauldron, with fans and players continuing to roar long after the final whistle. A deserved point, earned through belief, energy and sheer will – and a moment that will live long in the memory in Hamburg.
