HSV lose 4-1 in Paderborn
Hamburger SV suffered a 4-1 defeat away to SC Paderborn on Sunday afternoon and therefore lost any chance of promotion this season.
Before Matchday 33, it was clear that HSV needed to avoid defeat in Paderborn in order to stand a chance to be in the promotion play off come the end of the season. However, after a disappointing away defeat HSV confirmed second division status for the coming season. Die Rothosen began the game well, but the hosts made good of their first chance on the counter through Vasiliadis in the 25th minute. Just 20 seconds into the second half Vasiliadis doubled his tally and the Paderborn lead, before Rick van Drongelen pulled one back in the 71st minute. Paderborn’s Antwi-Adjej scored a double within five minutes to ensure his side’s victory (81’, 86’).
First a blow…
Head coach Hannes Wolf had a setback shortly before kick-off, when his number one Julian Pollersbeck was struck down with illness. Tom Mickel took his place between the sticks. Wolf opted for a back three similar to the one used when HSV defeated Paderborn in the DFB-Pokal quarter final and named David Bates alongside Leo Lacroix and Rick van Drongelen. Douglas Santos played an attacking midfield role behind an attacking pair of Bakery Jatta and Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Hamburg started the game the better of the two sides and almost took the lead, particularly posing a threat from set pieces. Paderborn’s Gjasula cleared Leo Lacroix’s header off the line, before goalkeeper Zingerle turned Rick van Drongelen’s effort round the post. The efforts underlined a strong opening 20 minutes for HSV, but the hosts took the lead through Vasiliadis just five minutes later, a goal which changed the game. Wolf’s men reacted well to the goal and searched for an equaliser, and Khaled Narey had a perfect chance to level the scores but his effort was well saved. After that, neither side was able to build many attacks and much of the play was predominantly in the middle of the pitch, with a lot of individual duels. With not many more goalscoring chances at either end, the first half ended with Paderborn taking a slight advantage into the changing rooms.
… and then the knockout
Paderborn raced into a 2-0 lead just 20 seconds into the second half. Douglas misplaced a backpass to Lacroix and Vasiliadis was able to capitalise before slotting the ball home. After the early second half goal, HSV found it difficult to get back into the game as they were still susceptible to the Paderborn counter attack. Some good work from Tom Mickel ensured the scores were kept at just 2-0, before van Drongelen’s header provided HSV with a lifeline (71’).
However as HSV committed themselves to more attacks in search for an equaliser, they were stung twice in quick succession on the counter attack through Antwi-Adjej (81’, 86’). It was a disappointing result and a frustrating afternoon for die Rothosen, as it was confirmed that a direct return to the Bundesliga was now impossible and the good league position at the start of the year was not made use of.
