HSV see off Mainz 05 with 4-0 home win
Rayan Philippe bagged a brace (10’,61’) while Albert Sambi Lokonga (6’) and Jean-Luc Dompe (52’) also got on the score sheet to record a second, and very much deserved, Bundesliga home win this season for the Rothosen.
HSV celebrated their second home victory of the campaign on Bundesliga matchday six, defeating 1. FSV Mainz 05 4-0 on Sunday evening (5th October). The 57,000 in attendance at the Volksparkstadion witnessed Hamburg race into a 2-0 lead inside 10 minutes through Sambi Lokonga (6’) and Philippe (10’). The second half bore similar early fruit as HSV doubled their tally for the day via goals from Dompe (51’) and Philippe once more (61’) to seal a 4-0 win.

Early quick-fire double
Merlin Polzin was forced to replace two regulars in his team following last weekend’s 0-0 draw away to Union Berlin. Warmed Omari (ankle injury) and Fabio Vieira (suspended) made way for Nicolas Capaldo and Sambi Lokonga to come into the side. The latter of the two new starters took little time to make his impact on proceedings, reacting quickest to the rebound after Giorgi Gocholeishvili unleashed a strike from 18 yards out, which Mainz keeper Rieß could only turn onto the post. Sambi Lokonga subsequently had the simple task of side-footing home from around seven yards out (6’). HSV’s first attack brought deserved reward for their bright start to the contest, which they soon followed up on. A second dangerous break forward also ended with the ball finding the visitors’ net as Philippe latched onto a Königsdörffer delivery from the right-hand side before using his body well to allow him to turn inside the box and fire into the far bottom corner from both a tight angle and with his weaker right foot for 2-0 (10’). If only the Rothosen had continued that level-headed efficiency in front of goal, they would have extended their advantage minutes later, and perhaps should have done, when both Philippe’s (16’) Königsdörffer’s (17’) next efforts from central positions inside the area found only the gloves of Rieß.
Mainz’s first moment of note came shortly before the 20-minute mark when Nadiem Amiri made Heuer Fernandes parry away with his free-kick from 25 yards out. The home shot stopper preserved his clean sheet again 10 minutes later when he got his fingertips to a long-range effort from Kaishu Sano to keep it from heading into the top corner (30’). HSV continued to get forward through effective link-up play and rapid breaks downfield. Muheim sent an attempt just wide of the left-hand upright in the 36th minute, meaning the Hamburg lead remained 2-0 as the half-time whistle sounded.

Two more goals after the break
The second period began in a similar vein to the first, with HSV bringing the same intensity and creating further good chances. This time around though, it was their third shot of the half that delivered the next goal. Two failed attempts had come through Philippe (49’), who tested Rieß from 20 yards, before Dompe directed a shot over the crossbar (51’). The Frenchman’s aim was far better for his subsequent effort, however. Following a turnover in midfield and a clever pass out wide by Nicolas Capaldo, the left winger burst slightly forward before hammering the ball into the near top corner (52’). The Volksparkstadion’s atmosphere was already electric but it went up yet another notch nine minutes later when the latest swift counter attack culminated in Nicolai Remberg slipping the onrushing Philippe in on goal after the forward outpaced Dominik Kohr in a footrace. When then faced one-on-one with Rieß, he delightfully dinked the ball over the keeper into the back of the net for his second goal of the evening. With the win sealed at 4-0, Polzin opted to make multiple changes, bringing on Robert Glatzel, among others, and the striker soon made Rieß work once more with a long-distance strike (72’).
Throughout the final 20 minutes, Mainz gave their all to try and get on the score board, but the HSV defensive trio of Elfadli, Vuskovic and Capaldo stood firm. The only brief moments of concern came via the visiting side’s set-pieces; however, to no avail. At the other end, Balde narrowly missed the right-hand upright from 18 yards out when he had the chance to make the win even more emphatic after another counter (86’). Shortly afterwards, the Rothosen’ second Bundesliga victory of the campaign was confirmed and it was more than deserved.
