HSV send their support to Kevin Keegan
Hamburger SV are thinking of their former legendary attacking player Kevin Keegan after it was announced that he has been diagnosed with cancer. Keegan is regarded as one of the greatest footballers ever to wear HSV’s colours.
Former HSV player Kevin Keegan has been diagnosed with cancer. The family of the 74-year-old football icon, who played during the 1970s and 1980s for clubs including Liverpool, Hamburger SV, Southampton and Newcastle United, made the news public on Wednesday evening (7th January). In an official statement, the family said: “Kevin was recently admitted to hospital for further evaluation of ongoing abdominal symptoms. These investigations have revealed a diagnosis of cancer, for which Kevin will undergo treatment. Kevin is grateful to the medical team for their intervention and ongoing care. During this time, the family are requesting privacy, and will be making no further comment.”
Joseph Kevin Keegan joined HSV from Liverpool in 1977. During his three years with the Rothosen, the dynamic attacker became one of the Bundesliga’s first true superstars. He won the German title with HSV in the 1978/79 season and, thanks to his passionate, all-action style, quickly became a firm fan favourite. While in Hamburg, Keegan won the Ballon d’Or twice as Europe’s Footballer of the Year (1978 and 1979). The former England international, who earned 63 caps and captained the Three Lions for many years, made a total of 90 competitive appearances for HSV, scoring 32 goals. Affectionately known as ‘King Kev’ or ‘Mighty Mouse’ by fans of both Liverpool and HSV, Kevin Keegan created countless unforgettable moments and remains to this day one of the greatest players ever to represent the club.
Hamburger SV stand alongside their former legend at this difficult time and send their thoughts and strength to Kevin Keegan and his family. Stay strong, Mighty Mouse!
