HSV sign Albert Grönbaek on loan
The 24-year-old attacking player joins HSV as the club’s third new arrival this winter, moving on loan from Stade Rennais for the remainder of the season.
Hamburger SV have strengthened their attacking options with the signing of Danish international Albert Grönbaek. The 24-year-old joins HSV on loan until the end of the season from French top-flight side Stade Rennais. Grönbaek, who will wear the number 23 shirt at HSV, was most recently on loan at Genoa.
“With Albert, we’re adding an internationally experienced player who can operate in several attacking positions. In a difficult winter transfer window, Claus and his team have found a creative solution to strengthen our attack,” commented board member Eric Huwer. “Albert was keen to make the move and wanted to join HSV. We’re confident he’ll settle in quickly – the proximity to his home country and his understanding of German will certainly help.”

Claus Costa said of HSV’s third winter signing, following Damion Downs and Sander Tangvik: “Albert is a versatile player who feels most comfortable in an attacking midfield role, but can also be used in the half-spaces or on the left wing. He’s a creative player with strong technical ability, has a good eye for goal and also works hard without the ball. Albert was still part of Denmark’s senior side in the autumn and is highly motivated to rediscover his best form with us. We want to support him as much as possible and fully believe in his ability.”
Eight caps for Denmark
Grönbaek added: “HSV are a huge club and the fans are incredible. I’m really happy about the move – for me, it’s a big opportunity. I had good conversations with Claus Costa and Merlin Polzin, and I could clearly see how I’d fit into the system. I want to help create chances and contribute with goals and assists. I’m full of excitement about getting started.”
Albert Grönbaek Erlykke was born in Risskov on 23rd May 2001. The right-footer came through the youth ranks at AGF, where he made the step up to the first team ahead of the 2022/23 season. After a spell at FK Bodø/Glimt in Norway, he joined Stade Rennais in the summer of 2024. Grönbaek made 18 competitive appearances for the French side, scoring two goals and providing one assist, before being sent out on loan twice – first to Southampton for the second half of last season, and most recently to Genoa. He featured six times for the Italian side but missed several matches through injury. At international level, Grönbaek has earned eight senior caps for Denmark since making his debut in September 2024, scoring once.
Moin and welcome to Hamburg, Albert!
