HSV sign Terem Moffi

New centre-forward for the Rothosen: Hamburger SV have secured the services of Terem Moffi. The 27-year-old Nigerian joins the Hanseatic club from OGC Nice. Moffi completed his mandatory medical examinations at the Athleticum at the Volkspark last weekend before signing his contract. At HSV, the left-footed forward will wear the number 9.

“Terem is an excellent fit for our approach. With his signing, we are giving ourselves even more options and versatility in the centre-forward position and further increasing the quality of our squad. His career to date has given him extensive experience at a high international level, which he can also pass on to our young players. We are delighted that Terem is now at HSV and would like to give him a very warm welcome,” says Board Member for Sport Kathleen Krüger.

“We are very pleased to have completed the signing of Terem. He is a striker who is difficult to contain because of his physicality, determination and style of play. He is capable of attacking the space in behind, has an enormous presence in the penalty area and possesses the necessary defensive qualities. We are convinced that Terem will give our game additional cutting edge and our squad greater versatility as a result. The priority now is to integrate him quickly so that, as a team, we can start the new Bundesliga season with plenty of energy and conviction,” adds Sporting Director Claus Costa.

At the age of 27, Terem Igobor Moffi can already look back on a varied career as a professional footballer. The forward has already played in six countries, with Germany now becoming the seventh. Moffi was born on 25 May, 1999, in the Nigerian port city of Calabar and moved to England at the age of 17, where he played at Buckswood Football Academy.

Moffi took his first steps in professional football in Lithuania. The goalscorer initially played for FK Kauno Žalgiris before later joining FK Riteriai. In January 2020, he moved to Belgium to join KV Kortrijk. Later that year, he made his next move to French side FC Lorient. At the beginning of 2023, OGC Nice eventually signed him. Most recently, the forward spent the second half of last season on loan at FC Porto. Across all of these spells, he scored 88 goals and provided 13 assists in 228 competitive appearances.

Moffi has also been a full Nigeria international since 2021. He has made 23 appearances for his country to date, scoring six goals and providing two assists. In October 2023, he started alongside his new team-mate Jordan Torunarigha.

“The coach was really very convincing in our conversations. The location, with its fantastic fans, and the club’s overall direction also played a role in my decision,” says Moffi of his move. “Even though HSV spent a few years in the second division, the club is still a big name, and that is the case all over the world. When I told my father about the club’s interest, he immediately knew which club I was talking about and was really excited. For me, that was crazy in a positive way. That makes me even happier to now be part of the club and its history myself.”

The centre-forward also spoke about his style of play: “As a striker, of course I love scoring goals, but I also love working for the team and keeping the whole group together. I’m the new guy in the team now, which always feels a little strange at first, but I’m really looking forward to getting to know everyone and getting started together soon.”
