“It was a magical evening at the Volksparkstadion”
Hamburger SV secured a point at home to FC Bayern München thanks to a passionate display. Read all the match reaction.
Daniel Heuer Fernandes: It is a justified draw that we worked hard to achieve. I am proud of our performance. We implemented exactly what we had hoped to beforehand. We wanted to play with intensity. We knew that there would be periods in which we would have to suffer but we withstood them well. We held out effectively against an opponent that possesses immense individual quality and on top of that made it very tricky for them. With and without the ball, we remained very compact and we just played well on the whole. There was successful variation in our game.
Nicolai Remberg: The coaching staff prepared us perfectly for this game. Our plan came fully into fruition: to defend man-to-man. I would not have expected us to also create so many chances against Bayern. I thought things could go badly after they made it 2-1 directly after half-time. I can only take my hat off to the team for the way in which we played with such energy going forward. You cannot forget who we were up against today, but we managed to turn the game around.
“That showed our mental strength”
Miro Muheim: The coaching staff communicated to us that we would need to run more in order to have a chance in this one, and we did that well. We can be very proud of our performance. Conceding right after half-time was frustrating but the way we hit back showed our mental strength. It is an unbelievable feeling to earn a point against a team like Bayern.
Nicolas Capaldo: Every time you play at the Volksparkstadion is special. We know how well we play at home. This match showed that we are a team who gives it everything we have at all times. We had to run a lot today in order to chase down our opponent. We began the second half somewhat asleep but found a way back into the game and then defended tirelessly at the death.
Merlin Polzin: The traits which we demanded to see from the team beforehand – courage, causticity, determination – all came to the fore in our performance. We were extremely brave in possession and had a lot of variation in our positioning. A huge compliment has to go to the coaching staff for the match plan and preparations. Through positional rotation, we repeatedly managed to drag our opponents out and when we didn’t have the ball, we knew that we would have to withstand Bayern’s quality on one or two occasions. We did that well. We did not become nervous, even when the opposition kept hold of the ball for longer periods. We were there where we needed to be at the decisive moments. It was a magical evening here at the Volksparkstadion.
