Jean-Luc Dompe given permission to seek move away from HSV

Hamburger SV have given Jean-Luc Dompe permission to hold talks over his future. Board member for sport Kathleen Krüger and sporting director Claus Costa personally informed the 30-year-old winger of the decision.

“Jean-Luc and HSV owe each other a great deal after the past few years together. However, his role within the squad changed significantly during the second half of last season. The coaching team then spoke to him directly at the end of the campaign and explained how they saw his role going forward. We reviewed the situation again at the start of pre-season and, after close consultation with the coaches, decided that Jean-Luc no longer figures in our plans for the season ahead,” said sporting director Claus Costa.

Dompe will therefore not travel with the squad to the adidas Home Ground in Herzogenaurach and will take no further part in HSV’s preparations for the 2026/27 season.

Board member for sport Kathleen Krüger said: “As we continue to develop both the club and the team, we expect our players to meet a clear set of standards. That means playing with intensity, showing total commitment and embracing the style of football we want to play. With that in mind, this decision has been made purely on sporting grounds. It was also important to us that the situation was handled openly and transparently throughout. Our aim this season is to keep moving forward and establish HSV more firmly in the Bundesliga. The demands we have set in training, the way we communicated the captaincy decision and the step we have taken here all show how determined we are to stay true to the direction we have chosen.”

Dompe was named in the squad for last Saturday’s 2-1 friendly defeat to Everton but did not come off the bench. He had also been an unused substitute in the 3-1 win over 1. FC Heidenheim, which brought HSV’s training camp in Austria to a close. His only appearance of pre-season came during the closing stages of the 3-2 defeat to SK Rapid.

Since joining HSV in the summer of 2022, the Frenchman has made 87 appearances in Bundesliga 2, scoring 15 goals and providing 32 assists. He went on to feature 20 times following the club’s return to the Bundesliga, scoring three goals, and has also made four appearances in the DFB-Pokal.
