Lasogga decides top of the table clash against Köln in 1-0 win
HSV defeat league leaders 1. FC Köln 1-0 thanks to an 86th minute goal from Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
HSV come away with three points in a huge game in the second Bundesliga. Die Rothosen beat 1. FC Köln 1-0 on Monday evening after Pierre-Michel Lasogga scored the winner four minutes from time. There were 53,876 fans packed inside the Volksparkstadion, including birthday boy Uwe Seeler, who saw an exciting game with decent chances for both sides. In the end, HSV deserved the win and have subsequently leapfrogged Köln in the table to go top of the league.
HSV were courageous but without luck…
HSV head coach only made one change from the 3-0 away win at Wehen Wiesbaden in midweek. Léo Lacroix replaced the suspended David Bates but the Switzerland international did not have much to do in the beginning as most of the game was played in midfield. Both teams were wary of taking risks and kept it tight. HSV had their first big chance of the game after fifteen minutes as Khaled Narey was found at the back post but his shot was well saved by Timo Horn. Shortly afterwards, HSV could have been awarded a penalty for a handball by Rafael Czischos but the referee decided not to point to the spot. Fiete Arp could have opened the scoring after a great strike from outside the area but his effort hit the post. HSV were overall more dangerous than Köln and did not have much defending to do. HSV continued to attack up until the half time whistle however there were not many clear-cut chances for either side.
… and scored the winning goal just before full time
Die Rothosen came out in the second half full of energy and were more dangerous than Köln however it was the visitors who had the first real chance of the game. Marco Höger almost forced the ball over the line after a short corner was played but Narey was there to clear for the hosts. HSV continued to create openings throughout the second half and Douglas Santos and substitute Hee-chan Hwang could have broken the deadlock but Horn was there to save twice. It looked as though the game was going to finish goalless before the ever-willing Douglas Santos found himself in behind to set up Pierre-Michel Lasogga. The goal was the last action of the half as the visitors failed to put HSV under any intense pressure to find the equaliser. Die Rothosen bagged themselves a home win through hard work and tenacity in a crucial game at the top of the league.
