Lasogga fires HSV into semi-finals
Hamburger SV defeated SC Paderborn 2-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Pierre-Michel Lasogga was the man of the moment as he claimed both goals.
On Tuesday evening (2nd April) Hamburger SV were victorious as they faced SC Paderborn in the DFB-Pokal quarter final. A 2-0 win ensured Die Rothosen’s appearance in their first cup semi-final since 2009. There was nothing to separate the two sides in the first half in front of the 15,000 supporters packed into a sold out Benteler-Arena, but HSV were clearly the better side after the break and took the lead in the 54th minute thanks to a Pierre-Michel Lasogga header. Even with the goal advantage, Wolf’s side showed no signs of taking their foot off the gas and Lasogga doubled his tally and the HSV lead in the 68th minute.
Many of HSV’s first-half attacks went through Bakery Jatta and the left hand side, but the final pass or finish was often missing.

Lasogga surprised at first…
Head coach Hannes Wolf made three changes to the starting XI from the goalless draw against VfL Bochum, and also made some tactical switches. HSV started the game with five in defence in order to combat the strong Paderborn attacking threat. Among the three centre-backs was Kyriakos Papadopoulos, who made his first appearance of the season and helped his team towards a clean sheet. The hosts came close with their high tempo attacks, but Papadopoulos and his team mates were everywhere to get themselves between the ball and the goal. Their defensive efforts ensured that Paderborn’s best chances to score were only a pair of free-kicks on the edge of the area. HSV were also impressive in possession, with the experience of Lewis Holtby and Gideon Jung in midfield. Die Rothosen exploited the left flank often but the attacks didn’t result in any goals, either lacking a final ball or due to the finish narrowly missing the target. Jatta and Mangala both saw their efforts go close, as well as Lasogga, who shortly before half-time, was surprised to see the ball fall to him at close range and was unable to capitalise on the chance, which meant there were no goals to separate the two sides as they headed in at half-time.
Pierre-Michel Lasogga was in fine form, finding the back of the Paderborn net on two occasions.

… before scoring a brace
After the whistle, HSV picked up where they had left off in the first half - uncompromising in defence and relentless in possession of the ball. In the first few minutes of the second half, Die Rothosen had two great chances to break the deadlock through Douglas Santos and Lasogga. In the 54th minute, Hamburg’s number 10 made the most of a Douglas corner as he headed the ball into the back of the net and gave HSV the lead. With one foot almost in the semi-final, Lasogga remained ice-cool as he smashed the ball home once again to double the lead in the 68th minute, after some fantastic interplay between Holtby and Orel Mangala. A brace from the German forward ensured a deserved victory for Die Rothosen, who controlled the game and didn’t allow Paderborn a chance. With a two goal lead, Wolf’s men played high up the field and saw a lot of the play conducted in the home side’s half. Whilst still posing an attacking threat, HSV were sure not to take too many risks or commit too many men forward. As a result, Die Rothosen were able to see out the game effectively and progress into the semi-finals, to the delight of the travelling supporters.

No show from HSV
HSV head coach Markus Gisdol was forced into changing his team ahead of the trip south. Long term injured first choice keeper Adler was still recovering from a broken rib before his understudy Mathenia also got injured and was ruled out of the matchday 31 encounter. Up stepped under-21 stopper Mikel to the fray. Key winger Kostic who scored the only goal of the game between the two sides on matchday 14 was suspended so his place went to Austrian Gregoritsch. Ostrzolek got the nod at left back ahead of Douglas Santos while Walace replaced Jung in defensive midfield. Gisdol made four changes in all to the side which lost 1-2 at home to relegation certainties Darmstadt last time out. The new-look formation struggled early on. Augsburg created three top scoring opportunities within the opening 20 minutes. New keeper Mikel managed to keep out efforts by Kohr and Schmid and was grateful to be able to watch a Stafylidis free kick fizz narrowly wide of target. On 22 minutes the visitors were in luck again as an Altintop effort struck the left hand post with Mikel beaten. It seemed to the capacity crowd including yet another sold out contingent of travelling HSV faithful that it weould only be a matter of time before the home side would break the deadlock and they did as Altintop rounded off two counter attacks on 28 and 41 minutes to make the halftime score 2-0 to Augsburg. Mickel was powerless on both occasions and was HSV’s best man before the break.
Deserved defeat
Lasogga came on for Gregoritsch and Jung replaced Walace at the start of the second half as Gisdol opted for a two-pronged attack. Later Jatta replaced Ostrzolek. The ploy simply didn’t work as the Rothosen had more of the ball than in the previous half but were completely harmless in front of goal. Augsburg played a much more intelligent game and struck the woodwork again through Baier. That superior intelligence was underlined late on as Augsburg struck twice through Max and substitute Bobadilla (76., 85.). It was game over for HSV who failed to threaten until the 84th minute for Lasogga and Wood to miss chances. It was simply not good enough and the Rothosen remain just one point above the relegation play off spot in the table. Matchday 22 sees Gisdol and Co. host Mainz who are level on points but two places better due to a superior goal difference. Only a win will do as the teams lock horns at the Volksparkstadion in Hamburg next Sunday (07.05.17, 3.30 PM).
