Last-minute Vieira winner sinks Stuttgart
Fabio Vieira raised the roof inside the Volksparkstadion with his stoppage-time winner in HSV’s victory over VfB Stuttgart. Robert Glatzel had put the hosts ahead before his goal was cancelled out by an Undav equaliser.
Hamburger SV won their matchday 12 home game against VfB Stuttgart in dramatic style. The Rothosen put in a bold first-half performance and took a deserved 1-0 lead in the 17th minute through Glatzel in front of 57,000 spectators at the sold-out Volksparkstadion. After the break, the momentum tilted ever more in favour of the visiting side. First, Undav (54’) scored the equaliser, while later on HSV had to play a man down after a second yellow card for Rössing-Lelesiit. Stuttgart appeared to have the final big chance of the match from a free kick in stoppage time, only for HSV to counter immediately and score a late 2-1 winner through Vieira, sealing an unexpected and spectacular last-minute victory.

Glatzel opens the scoring…
HSV coach Polzin made four changes to his starting XI from the 1-0 defeat in Augsburg. Mikelbrencis started as the right wing-back instead of Gocholeishvili, while Philippe replaced Vieira ahead of him. There were two more new faces in the front line: Rössing-Lelesiit operated on the left and Glatzel provided a goal threat through the middle. Stuttgart controlled the opening minutes, however, HSV were strong in transition and took their chances. Glatzel saw his effort hit the crossbar before coolly finishing his chance from an outstanding Rössing-Lelesiit assist in the 17th minute to give HSV a 1-0 lead. The goal gave the Rothosen confidence, while Stuttgart couldn’t regain their early control for the remainder of the half. Defensively, HSV were extremely solid and did not allow any real Stuttgart chances after taking the lead. With the ball, they gained control and created two or three good counter-attacking chances, which Philippe and Königsdörffer narrowly missed. Königsdörffer came on in the 34th minute for goalscorer Glatzel, who had to be substituted due to injury. HSV went into halftime with a narrow but deserved lead.

…Vieira has the last laugh
The game changed after the break. Stuttgart had already brought on top scorer Undav late in the first half and started the second half with more substitutes in Leweling and Stiller, both senior Germany internationals. VfB increasingly took control and equalised through Undav, who tapped in after a shot by Leweling. HSV gradually fought their way back into the match, partly through a triple substitution by Polzin. Vuskovic had two headed opportunities, however, could not find the back of the net with either. HSV suffered another setback in the 81st minute, as Rössing-Lelesiit received a second yellow card, leaving Hamburg down to ten men and looking to hold on for a draw. As time began to run out, Stuttgart were awarded a final free kick from a promising position in stoppage time. HSV cleared the free kick, setting substitute Balde free down the left. No-one could catch him as he squared the ball to fellow substitute Vieira, who kept his nerve in the 94th minute and slotted home to make it 2-1. What followed was sheer madness, as the Volksparkstadion erupted and celebrated the victory long after the final whistle.
