Latest squad news ahead of Stuttgart at home
A hat-trick of home games in a week await the Rothosen, with the first one set for Sunday (15:30 CET) against VfB Stuttgart. Head coach Merlin Polzin expects “a tough opponent” and has been preparing his players meticulously. Three members of his squad are training individually at the moment as they manage their workload.
HSV began their training on Tuesday ahead of their clash with the side currently sitting in fifth place, with Luka Vuskovic and Giorgi Gocholeishvili sitting the session out as they manage their workload after an intense period. Captain Yussuf Poulsen (minor muscle strain in hip) and centre-back Daniel Elfadli (adductor injury) worked individually. “Yussi is working hard on his comeback. He’s looking to make the next step and we hope he can be back in full training by the end of the week. Sunday might just come too soon for him though,” said Polzin. The Hamburg native, who celebrated one year in charge recently, was more optimistic about Elfadli’s potential involvement at the weekend: “I’m a lot more hopeful because he’s injured a lot less frequently and rarely has muscular problems. He’s got a check-up at the end of the week, so we’ll wait and see.” Jean-Luc Dompé is still recovering from his Achilles tendon issues, and so is training with a reduced workload, given the upcoming busy week. The Frenchman did not train on Tuesday, but did complete an individual session on Wednesday (26th November). “Unfortunately, he’s still dealing with issues that prevent him from playing pain-free. We’re taking that into account and planning around our upcoming games, not that they’re any less important.”

“A very tough opponent”
Wednesday’s training saw the return of Vuskovic and Gocholeishvili and kept a focus on preparing for the challenges that VfB Stuttgart will present. The fifth-place side have been on an incredible journey since their last meeting with HSV in the 2023 Bundesliga relegation play-off. After coming second in the 2023/24 season, Stuttgart went on to win the DFB-Pokal last season. “Stuttgart have developed amazingly since that relegation play-off. They play a very interesting brand of football and we know they are a very tough opponent,” warned Polzin. “We need to make sure that they don’t find playing against us enjoyable. We’re at home which should give us that added energy.”
The Rothosen will need to make sure they carry on working with intensity if they want to achieve that. “Recently, we’ve managed to keep every game close. With the exception of the Köln game, all of them have been decided by just one goal. One of our key focuses is taking more chances, but at the same time we need to improve our defending – the Augsburg game taught us that. We’ll keep working on that this week.”
