Lewis Holtby to leave HSV at the end of the season

HSV head of sport Ralf Becker has informed the midfielder of the club plans for the future – Hotlby will leave after spending five years with the Rothosen.

Hamburger SV have used the first international break of 2019 as preparation for the closing weeks of the 2. Bundesliga season. Alongside these preparations, Ralf Becker has looked further ahead to the future. The head of sport has held several discussions with head coach Hannes Wolf to begin to plan the future squad. On Thursday evening (21st March), the pair spoke to Lewis Holtby and informed the midfielder that he won’t receive an offer of a new contract at the club. The club hierarchy has stated that the HSV players deserve to know the club's future plans in advance and as a result, Holtby will the leave the club at the end of the season.

“Lewis has accepted the club’s decision in a very professional manner. He will continue to commit to our cause and help HSV achieve the best possible outcome.”

Holtby joined Hamburger SV on a permanent basis in 2015 after previously joining the club on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in 2014. The former Germany international is under contract with the club until 30th June 2019.
