Mathenia latest: Severe bruising

The injury happened during a collision between the keeper and team mate Dennis Diekmeier in the recent 1-2 home defeat to Darmstadt. It is not yet known whether or not he will be available in Augsburg.

Better news regarding Christian Mathenia. The keeper sustained heavy bruising to his right knee in a collision with a team mate during the matchday 30 loss at home to Darmstadt last weekend. The stopper underwent a scan in Hamburg to reveal the extent of the injury on Monday. He could be available for HSV’s crucial away game in Augsburg on Saturday afternoon: “As bad as it is having to miss training for a couple of days, I am relieved that the injury is not serious. I will do everything possible to get fit again as soon as possible”, Mathenia told HSV.de.

Should he miss out, experienced replacement Tom Mickel will be called up because first choice stopper Rene Adler is still struggling to shake off the after effects of a broken rib. Mickel played his only Bundesliga game in Augsburg which the Rothosen won 3-1: “Tom does a sterling job with the under-21s. I have no problem in selecting him for the trip to Augsburg”, said HSV head coach Markus Gisdol on the keeper who has made the first team squad a dozen times so far this season.
