Miro Muheim and Sander Tangvik bow out of World Cup
Both HSV players saw their World Cup campaigns end in extra-time quarter-final defeats.
The 2026 World Cup journey is over for Miro Muheim and Sander Tangvik after Switzerland and Norway were both knocked out in the quarter-finals in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
Switzerland suffered a 3-1 extra-time defeat to reigning world champions Argentina in Kansas City overnight from Saturday into Sunday. Alexis Mac Allister (10’) gave the South Americans an early lead before Dan Ndoye (64’) equalised for the Swiss. A stunning strike from Julian Alvarez (112’) and a Lautaro Martinez goal (120’+1) then secured Argentina’s place in the semi-finals. Switzerland had been reduced to 10 men when Breel Embolo was shown a second yellow card for simulation (72’). HSV defender Muheim came on in the 86th minute and operated on the left flank.
Reaching the quarter-finals represented the joint-best World Cup finish in Switzerland’s history. They had previously made the last eight on three occasions, most recently more than 70 years ago in 1954.
Norway, whose squad included HSV goalkeeper Tangvik, had reached the quarter-finals for the first time in their fourth World Cup appearance. Their run came to an end with a 2-1 extra-time defeat to England in Miami. Andreas Schjelderup (36’) put Norway ahead before Jude Bellingham equalised in first-half stoppage time (45’+2) and struck again in extra time (93’) to send England through. Tangvik was an unused substitute. “This is something special for our country. We can be proud of ourselves, regardless of what happens against England,” the 23-year-old had told HSV.de ahead of the tie as he reflected on Norway’s historic World Cup campaign.
